As everyone knows, the Dallas Cowboys have one of the most talented rosters in the NFL. And with the need to trim the team from 90 players down to 53 before the final deadline, it was expected that some promising names would be left out. Among the toughest cuts were running back Royce Freeman, wide receiver Jalen Cropper, linebacker Willie Harvey Jr., and undrafted rookie Julius Wood, who faced stiff competition in the Cowboys' safety room.
Even with the good news that Cropper and Harvey were brought back to the practice squad, Freeman is still searching for a new opportunity. On the other hand, Julius Wood was claimed by the Titans, meaning the Cowboys let go of one of the most promising undrafted rookies of the season.
Speaking of the 2024 draft picks, the Cowboys broke a long-standing tradition this year. Each of their first six picks secured a spot on the final 53-man roster. The seventh pick, offensive lineman Nathan Thomas, was placed on the injured list with a designation to return.
But it was the eighth and final draft pick, defensive tackle Justin Rogers, who caused the biggest surprise by not making the team and being claimed by the Bengals.
Now, Cowboys Nation, let’s talk seriously. When Rogers was cut, many fans were confused. That confusion quickly turned into concern when his name didn’t appear in the first wave of signings for the practice squad. Shortly after, the news broke that the Auburn product had been signed to the Bengals’ practice squad.
Rogers became the first Cowboys draft pick to be waived before the start of the season since 2019. This is surprising, considering Dallas has always placed great importance on retaining their draft selections.
Even though Rogers was a late-round pick, he showed more talent than many of the nose tackles the Cowboys have selected in recent years. The perfect plan would have been to keep him on the practice squad and develop him alongside veterans Linval Joseph and Jordan Phillips. Rogers still needs to improve his ability to shed blocks, but as a 6'3", 320-pound player, he had all the tools to enter the NT rotation by next season.
So, what do you think, Cowboys fans? Did the Cowboys make a mistake by letting Justin Rogers slip away? Drop your opinion in the comments, share this news with your friends on social media, and of course, subscribe to the channel so you don’t miss anything coming up this season! The excitement is just beginning, and you won’t want to miss a thing! See you next time!
