I worked at a call center for a few years and I had several female coworkers talk about having to do this sort of thing. It was so common we even had a form for aliases just so management could keep track. And it wasn't just women, we even had a dude on my team with an extremely ethnic name who went by "Henry" instead just to be taken seriously.
