This actually happened with an IRL Old West outlaw, or near enough. A proper hanging requires knowing the exact height and weight of the victim so the neck breaks properly. When the outlaw (I can't remember his name) was sentenced they took his measurements but the town he was in lacked a gallows so they had to build one which took several months. Meanwhile the outlaw was sitting in jail eating like a hog and putting on weight. When the day of the hanging finally came he had gained so much weight that when he fell through the trap door the rope completely severed his head from his body
