What can old dogs teach us about human aging and cancer? Dr. David Waters wittily shows us how getting "out of the laboratory and into the living room" allowed him to make a ground-breaking discovery in very old dogs that could hold important implications for new and effective cancer treatments in people.
Dr. Waters is Professor of Oncology at Purdue University's College of Veterinary Medicine and is nationally recognized for his research on dogs as models of human aging and the comparative aspects of cancer in humans and dogs. Dr. Waters is also Associate Director of the Purdue Center on Aging and the Life Course.

Love this video. Thank you 🧡🌺 my baby girl, Kota (husky mix) passed Sunday..18 years old this past October.. I thought I was more mentally prepared but I wasn't. A part of me feels gone.. the bond, the love and joy..ill miss her everyday. I chose not to euthanize her..she passed barking up until the end, fighting it so hard because she didn't want to leave.. I just wish I had been holding her instead of getting in bed to rest for a few hours.. dogs are so much more than a dog.. a best friend..a child. The innocence, the genuine endless love they give is an amazing gift to experience..I am forever grateful she was a part of my life. Love you Kota girl 🌺🧡💖

Great video, thanks. I'm quitting my job. I've been saying the stress is killing me, but now I believe it really is.

We had a Bernese mountain dog, Ema. Bernese lifespan is up to 8 years at the most. Ema lived 16 years, a bit slow in her last few years. We made a ramp for her so that she can walk out of the house into a yard by herself because her hind legs didn't serve here very well when old. During nights she was always in the house as well as during extreme (hot or cold) weather, otherwise outside. She used that ramp until two weeks before she died in her sleep. A magnificent girl she was.

THANK YOU! As the owner of a 12 1/2 year old unnuetered male rottweiler who has never been to the vet except for vaccinations, i have always wondered why. If you say cancer is caused by stress than i must have something to do with it. You cant startle any rott i have ever had. Nothing bothers them.

My Shar Pei just passed at 12. My other two Shar Pei/Dalmatian mixes passed at 12 & 15. I miss them much. Also, I have an old girl now, Lab/Terrier/Whatsit mix, who's 11. And an old orange cat who's 20. We all live a stress-free life here w/ plenty of yard space, doggie doors for everybody to go in & out whenever they want, fun car rides to the park & to pick up goodies from the drive thru, & tons of treats & lovins

I think they need to study the owners as well. The owners may be doing things (or not doing things) that benefit the dogs and result in lowered cortisol levels. Hey, maybe the owners have lower cortisol levels too.

Loved your talk and i can see how my constant anxiety has accelerated ageing. Thank you for doi ng this work. I had 2 dogs 7 and 8 die within 1 year of eachother from malignant lymphoma. That was 5 years ago and i still want to know how and why this happens

My best friend Leon was a pit bull and he lived till he was 18. At the age of 16 he choked on a bone and it caused him to have a massive heart attack. The vet didn't think he would last the night but he slowly recovered over a period of a fee weeks. But soon after that his legs started to go and he went downhill from there. I miss him so much - he passed away 5 years ago and I wish they didn't have such short life spans - it's so unfair :(

My loved Doberman he lived to be 13 and he was more wise than me I believe?!. I was a young man, 27 when I got him and 40 when he died but I can as the most dog owners who love their dog do, understand him almost better than any human

An interesting perspective on research" get out of the laboratory and take a real look at life without your own personal constraints and biases!

I believe Dr. David Waters has made some wonderful observations. My Australian Shepherd Lucy died at 17 years of age last year (Aussies live 12-14 years). Lucy was very happy, energetic and busy, always having a job. Notably, she never seemed stressed and, in fact, could calm other dogs with her behavior.
