Arttective is a video essay channel that observes closely the world of art through curious and inquisitive eyes.

Today's video essay analyses and reviews the meaning behind Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away and how it is more than an animated masterpiece. It has an incredible depth when it comes to teaching children how to deal with a frustrating and seemingly hopeless situation. Sifting through these precious life lessons, I realized they make the film even more beautiful than it already is. Please watch the entire video to see the meaning behind Spirited Away!

In this animated feature by noted Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, 10-year-old Chihiro (Rumi Hiiragi) and her parents (Takashi Naitô, Yasuko Sawaguchi) stumble upon a seemingly abandoned amusement park. After her mother and father are turned into giant pigs, Chihiro meets the mysterious Haku (Miyu Irino), who explains that the park is a resort for supernatural beings who need a break from their time spent in the earthly realm and that she must work there to free herself and her parents.

Spirited Away is one of those films that you can watch countless times and still pick up on little details you’ve never noticed each time. I love this film so much!

I feel like Haku also teaches that you shouldn't be afraid to let go of something.

I never thought of the crying scene in this lens of healthy venting. It is really cool

Something that always strikes me as important is that when she decides not to look back, the hair tie her friends made sparkles in the light. Even though she’s leaving her loved ones behind she will always have them with her.

That's exactly why the crying scene is my favorite. It's showing that it's okay to vent through crying and also shows the building trust she begins to have for Haku, who feeds and comforts her.

The shine of the hair tie at 7:15 (which was made by her friends) continues to highlight the power of love and friendship for solving an individual’s problems and challenges

I just wish that sometimes I can fade into the world in spirited away and forget reality. This video is truly inspiring and although I long for my life to be like a fairy tale where there is a happy ending and true love, this showed me that reality is not what you always think it is. I just watched spirited away for the first time not long ago and I'm instantly attached. The story, amazing. The art, beautiful. I just wish that the spirit world were real so I could go there sometimes.

I think this was a fantastic video, loved it. There's so many life lessons to draw from Spirited Away and I think people tend to get so caught up in all those film theories and everything else, that they forget them. Spirited Away is very much a film about life and about a little girl growing up, learning how to navigate life. It's interesting you said about the real world as an alien world, too. I recently did a video myself talking about the world here feeling alien because that's how the wider world feels to kids when they're forced to grow up/enter the world of work etc.

I really like your editing in this video too. I'm honestly shocked you don't have more subscribers, but I empathise 100% with the struggle and I've just given one extra subscriber.
