The holy grail of Japanese jazz has finally been found! This album was completely lost for the past twenty years with no known copies out there.
I have been searching for this specific album for over two years, which has brought me into contact with some very cool and diverse people. I had practically given up all hope of ever finding this album, when I received a facebook message a few days ago. Someone had finally found the album through Ryo Fukui's widow, Yasuko.

In any case, all stories of how this album got discovered aside, it's a wonderful piano masterpiece from front to back.
It features both some of Ryo's original compositions aswell as covers by other artists. The tone is kept pretty minimal,
featuring just Ryo Fukui and his piano. This album was recorded at Lutheran Hall, Sapporo on the 4th and 5th of June 1994.
I hope you'll enjoy this album as much as I do and that the search was worth it. :)

I know that Ryo Fukui learned the piano all by himself by the age of 22. And that's a great encouragement for me! (I'm 23 years old, i'm just one year late from this genius HAHAHAHA) And with a little help from my friends and family (especially my mother), i received words of encouragement and i will realize my dream of being a musician. I know it!!! it's never too late to chase your dreams. Never, never give

This album makes me wonder... how many beautiful albums have been lost over the years? What songs will we never get to hear?

Poor Yasuko. :( She gave us a precious gift through lending this album for archiving. Let us remember her and take a moment of silence to honor her husband the late Ryu Fukui. Stay strong; live happy Yasuko!!

Listening to this in a warm tuesday morning, in a south Italy's field with my little dog. I met these days a special girl. If I can get old i will remember these days as the best days of my life.

Ryu learned piano at 22...I'm 55 and I bought a guitar...It's never too late to become what you might've been....

Ryo Fukui, my man... you've made my summer in Paris so special. When I hear this music I can almost taste the whisky and feel that night breeze on my skin... it's like I'm transported on my terrace, there, at 3 am, alone, enjoying life at its fullest... I miss these careless days, now I have to work and work. I wish I could be stuck in that exact moment for a bit longer, just to make sure that it all was reality, and not a dream...
People sometimes like to associate melodies to what they experienced at the moment they heard it for the first time. For me, Ryo Fukui's piano will always be tied to a careless summer in Paris...

Two days ago a spider (daddy longlegs) ran behind my desk and hid there, because I touched his leg.
Now I'm playing this album in the morning (the speakers are on my desk) and Mr Spider came out from behind the desk, stopped a tad above the speakers and had a listen to.

Discovered this guy like a week ago heard this album was lost, thought I'd never hear it; I'm basically a totally new listener and get to hear something that hasn't been heard in decades. Awesome.

I've been blessed to have been in Sapporo for over a year now and have played at Slowboat (Ryo's club) pretty regularly as a bassist. Yasuko is such a wonderful person who carries the light of her late husband's work and continues to nurture and support the active jazz community here.

This is my first introduction to Ryo Fukui's compositions and jazz artistry. It's great to hear just a lot of good piano jazz in the morning with my coffee. Marcel the Drunkard, thanks for sharing this album.

I am playing this music every morning welcoming my kindergarten students to classroom. The music brings calmness as they enter and play quietly waiting for class to begin. Thank you.

I came back to this album, years later. Like coming back to the childhood village, or meeting an old love. I'm not who I used to be, but Ryo still makes me cry of beauty.
Thank you, Marcel, thank you, thank you.

Its good for us to have an appreciation for jazz music, Its the most complete musical language that is still alive, remember classical was once an improvised music. Jazz is the immediate successor to that form of expression for mankind. Its good to recognize this and appreciate it. Hope this doesn’t sound too pretentious.
