RIP Shane, one of the heroes of my youth, forever in my pantheon and in my heart and immortal through the art you have given us. Love from Italy.

"Mother wake me early in the morning" is a reference to work. The boys don't have enough money to buy a beer. The willingness to get up early and work is woven through the songs anger at oppression and the state of the county. Brilliant.

Love this performance. I read from Phil Chevrons blog this about Shane's mumbling over the parts: "Shane's gobbledegook version on The Tube was his own protest at the absurdity of the ongoing censorship of the song. If they didn't want his original lyric, they weren't going to get ANY lyric."

His writing and their music takes you away on a journey doesn’t it. Rip legend. Forever moved and touched by the poetry and soul of Shane

Genius songwriter of his generation; I love the purity and the defiance of his voice. Rest in peace Shane MacGowan.

This is probably my fave Pogues track amongst many brilliant tracks either penned by Shane or trad Irish. Even though the swear words were mumbled out he got through that quite well

RIP Shane. The Pogues had such talent, all the way around. Sad to see Shane deteriorate over the years. Rest in Peace, Shane.

Saw them in late 80's and early 90's in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Best gigs ever. Just sorry I didn't see them more often. Legends.

Brilliant here, McGowan deliberately not singing all the lines with swear words! I saw them live a year later in Ireland 1986, absolutely on fire they were. Good Times.
