The MC is doing his best to make modern foster care sound hellish and all I can think is "First World Problems". Full medical care, including elective surgery, a fully climate-controlled environment (if somewhat imperfect), food security, etc. Is it a perfect life? No. Is it worse than what billions of people put up with every day across the globe? I don't think so.
