Maybe someone can enlighten me, but I never understood why they put the desiccant in the hole in the middle of the spool. In my mind as soon as you vacuum seal it the hole in the middle is sealed off from the rest of the filament. So, The desiccant only pulls moisture from that little area and not anywhere near the actual filament itself.
When I'm not using my filament I vacuum seal it in a bag and I put two desiccant packs on the outer rim of the spool touching the filament. That to me is even a little overkill cuz the filament is under a vacuum and there is no moisture in a vacuum, but putting the desiccant in the middle hole, to me does absolutely nothing.

I don't have proof, but I believe that dropping desiccant in the spindle hole might be pretty ineffective because that compartment is pretty sealed off from the filament.
