Francis turbines come is all sizes, and are usually mounted with a vertical shaft, to isolate water from the generator. This also facilitates installation and maintenance.

I couldn't film where I went (for security reasons), but we visited a hydro power plant with 14 44 MW turbines, we went between the turbine and alternator (I think), where we could see the shaft turning, and it was 65 degrees Celcius in there, there was a sign saying it had the equivalent of 60, 000 hp, really impressive. The plant was built in the 60s and a lot of the equipment was original which was very cool to see
