“College is only worth it if you know what you want to get out of it.”

what employees these days don't understand is that HR is not there to protect YOU. HR is there to protect the COMPANY.

As someone who works in tech with a cs degree, charlie is absolutely right. Most of my time at uni was a complete waste and had nothing to do with my job as an engineer

As a software engineer Charlie is 100% correct

I work in IT. Have for 25 years. Don't give a damn about a college degree. Means nothing.

In the 1970s when I was looking for a full time job with benefits the interviewer asked me why I wasn't going to college. I explained it was expensive and I rather gain work experience and learn different aspects of the company and hopefully eventually get a promotion.
I was hired on the spot. Retired after 45 years with the same company.

I spent 40+ years in IT. I got trained as a mainframe programmer in the USAF in 1978. IT changes so fast that colleges cannot keep up. The last IT college grad I had to deal with was "Woke" and useless. I'm now retired and damn glad I no longer have to deal with any college indoctrinated individuals.

Experience beats qulifications, start as an apprentice and you dont have to pay any collage debt then you work your way up way quicker than any student can

He tells on himself. He said employers need years of experience, and that college doesn't matter.

One of my best friends is the IT director for my city’s PD. He didn’t graduate college. But he knows his stuff, better than most.

As a self-taught software engineer Charlie is right.

Im a IT manager for a larger company that operates across the world. I have a GED and learned my skills by doing the job for 20+ years and I started out by just building PC's

As a 66yr old, I have NEVER graduated from college, I learned tech & coding at work. I didn't realize what I was learning until I went to work for a large bank, and became their IT department. Kids today grow up with tech. It's MUCH easier to learn on the job than in any college.

As an employer, a college degree (achieved in the minimum prescribed period) in a technical field means that a prospective employee has the potential to finish a given job. It certainly doesn’t mean that they’re the best employees.

The company I work for employs 2100 ppl and dropped their college degree “preference” because we learned that college grads are less dedicated to the company’s goals.

Props to the kid for having a calm, rational conversation. Nice change.

I've worked in tech for 10 years now. The smartest and most well paid people I've met have all been college drop outs who started or joined startups they were passionate about.

Some businesses require 7 years of experience with programming languages that were released 5 years ago. I heard a story about the guy who created the language unable to get a Job for the language he created because they wanted two more years of experience than was possible

Employers care more about certifications than they ever would about a degree.
