So I've been doing this essay review since last year and many of you have gotten into the top unis (YAY!!). But these are some of the MOST COMMON mistakes I always comment on and give suggestions for people to improve upon.

Application for grad school is due in 2 days and I'm super thankful I came across this video. Because my personal statement doesn't use overly-sophisticated language, nor does it read like a laundry list of my accomplishments, like many of the personal statements I've read from those in my field, I've started feeling discouraged and insecure about it. With my writing being professional and easy to follow, I hope this will score in my favour by making the administrators' jobs easier.

I wanted to ask a question relating to ethnic background, because I'm not sure if it is good to mention it. I'm from Malaysia btw :)

Best to say truthful - as in CVs don't get caught out at interview - write about the concepts and arguements that interest you (relative to the degree) and put the authors' names in brackets afterwards. Not only does that avoid plagiarism, it explains your interest in those concepts and arguements (with understanding) whilst acknowledging the author and showing that you've read the papers/books/literature too.

I came across a MBA personal statement where only 500 words were allowed (iirc for many MBAs it's a 1000 words). However basic guidelines were given by the university, which needed careful reading.

Then it's a case of, edit, edit, edit, edit and edit it again. Don't waste words, stay relevant to the degree and what the university has asked of you in the guidelines. Be mindful to watch out for hyphens being counted as words not characters in some auto word count functions (count the words manually if unsure). Also a brief - in bold - heading can be useful as an aide memoire and to clarify to the reader (iirc they're not part of word count), however in 500 words, that's just two headings for two main sections relative to what the university has specified they want to know about.
