This Backswing Mistake is Killing Your Timing and Speed 😱

In this video, Mike Granato and Shaun Webb of Athletic Motion Gof address the common misconception of trying to take timing out of your golf swing. Great players understand the importance of timing and know that you can't take it out of the swing without making it worse. The guys show you exactly what timing is in the golf swing and how to train it so you can have perfect timing and speed in your golf swing.

They discuss what happens at the start of the backswing, going into the top of the backswing, and, most importantly, what happens in the downswing. Timing in the golf swing is when things happen in the swing, and you can relate this to other sports. Just like shooting a basketball free throw, the timing and sequence of movements are crucial.

Mike and Shaun explain the early part of the backswing and the specific speed that professionals have, which amateurs often lack. We'll also show you how to control and swing the mass of the club to your benefit and avoid bouncing off the shoulders, which is a common mistake.

Lastly, they examine the swings of recent tour winners and show you the similar things they do with regard to timing and speed in their swings, despite their different swing looks.

If you want to improve your golf swing, you need to understand and train your timing and speed. Watch this video to learn more!

All the years I've worked with, "professional" instructors, not one of them could explain this as succinctly as you gentlemen did in this video. I'm truly hoping this helps me return to my 5 hcp. Thank you for saving yet another golf swing. 🖐

***Alright, I have been meaning to comment on one of your videos and here it is.

You guys have changed the way I see golf and I have never been better than I am now. I am a victim of going down rabbit holes for years, changing my swing on the course after a bad shot, practicing for hours on the wrong things and grinding and not seeing results.

The day I committed to ONLY watch instructional videos from you guys I saw immediate results. That was a month ago and my HC has dropped to single digits and will continue to drop.

Just wanted to give a shout out to you guys for all the work you put in, the live lessons you upload and the way you break down the swing. I bought 4 tee shirts as a thank you for instruction and look forward to seeing your upcoming videos. No more rabbit holes, no more conflicting information and no more questioning my swing every time I hit a bad shot on the course! Having the ability to “swing athletically” has changed my game. 🙏🏻🙌🏻😄.

P.s if there is ever a time when you guys slow down and offer 2 hour lessons I will be flying from Cali to Florida/GA!

For me, nobody on YT quite gets to the things that really resonate with me like these guys. So much good stuff...

00.09 on the first try... I had seen your videos recommended by YouTube, but had never clicked on them until fellow golf instructor Eric Corgonro recommended you. Now a full time watcher. As others have said, your approach to teaching is so different than almost everybody else, yet so understandable. The Gear system showing what actually happens by the pros totally blows up so many misconceptions, such as the low and slow. Wonderful content guys, keep it up!

I've never heard the rhythm of the backswing explained so well. And this is something that has been lacking in my swing. Thanks!

Great video guys. Have never seen this information presented in this way before. In a lesson last year, a pro who is a friend of mine told me I needed to increase the speed of my backswing. I understood what he said but implementing it into the whole swing wasn’t easy. The way you integrated the downswing sequence and speed with the backswing was an “aha” moment for me. The step drill you mentioned really helps to increase the backswing speed. Dr. Kwon’s training video’s are excellent for this. Thanks for all the great material!!

That hairpin turn idea is a great analogy.

Your vids are really the best. Don't stop posting, please.
If i lived nearby, i'd really consider booking lessons with you - although i'm completely selftought (best was hdc 3) and actually never ever take lessons. But the big difference is your 3d motion capture, which truly tells how it is (no parallax etc in the way), your deep understanding of this technologie and your ability to teach how to convert desired numbers and angles into a swing"feel".

Thx!

.07 was my This video made me realize how slow my hand speed was at the beginning of the backswing. Once I started speeding up my hands earlier, I felt like I had way more time going into the down swing. Hitting the ball a lot further! Thank you, guys!

This is a cool video. I’m so pumped to get to the range asap. Multiple light bulbs just went off, like when I think about what it feels like to hit my best shots and my worst, this information makes so much sense now

This is easily the best channel out there to help fix your swing.

Crazy you posted this video today. I’d been chunking my wedges more than normal and used a more brisk takeaway this weekend and it really helped. Most consistent irons I’ve hit this year. Great stuff.

Very insightful and delivered in a succinct manner. Really has altered my concept of the golf swing and its elements.

I also was able to get .11 a couple times, however .13-.15 was far more common over 20 attempts. It aptly puts into perspective how fast the downswing happens, especially the last part of the sequence. I have a tendency to get fast which as you described has unpredictable results because of the chaotic transition. Thank you for putting together this instruction on pro timing, why it's important, and how different timing errors affect impact.

Great video guys. Very helpful. One tip for you if you don’t mind me sharing. I bet if you look at your retention graphs on this video you’ll see a sharp downturn around 12:30 and beyond.

This happens because the scene changes and the content ends and then it’s you making multiple asks (like, comment subscribe etc). It kind of feels like the video is over so people bounce.

My suggestion is to have a followup video that makes a lot of sense to this one and then tell people why they should watch it. Don’t say goodbye or ask for subs. Just explain what they’re missing in that next video. It will help retention time and session time metrics.

I’m off to the range to work on my swing speed now!
