EXPANDING DIAPER SCIENCE EXPERIMENT👶🏻! Full activity details below 👇🏼.

Materials needed:
👶🏻 Diaper (you can test multiple brands and compare)
👶🏻 Water
👶🏻 Cup

Cut open the diaper. Shake/flake off all the tiny white beads. Place them in a cup and fill with water. Watch the beads expand in size and become a gel!

✨What’s the science✨
Diapers contain a polymer called sodium Polyacrylate. A polymer is a a long chain or repeating units. You can think of it as a necklace with beads on it. Each bead is an individual unit and together they make the necklace (a polymer). This polymer is special because it can absorb 500-1000 X the mass of water, which makes is a super absorb and polymer (SAP). When it does so, it turns from a white powdery substance to a gel. The cool part is, if you add salt to the absorbed polymer, you can draw the water out of it!
