Totally agree that these pilots deserve a medal for heroic efforts that at least saved some of the passengers. These kinds of things happen in war zones and all of Russia is a war zone. No airlines should be flying in or out of Russian at all, including Aeroflot.

By the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, crew members of Embraer-190 passenger aircraft which tragically crashed while operating the Baku-Grozny flight – the pilots Igor Ivanovich Kshnyakin and Alexander Georgievich Kalyaninov, the flight attendant Hokuma Jalil Aliyeva have been posthumously awarded the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan.

Our flight attendants Zulfigar Sardar Asadov and Aydan Vagif Rahimli were awarded the 1st degree Bravery (Rashadat) Order.

They were awarded for their exceptional professionalism, courage and dedication in the performance of their official duties and in saving the lives of passengers during the accident.

Embraer aircraft are exceptionally well-built and have one of the best, if not the best, safety records among major manufacturers. They are robust and reliable airplanes. If the distance had been shorter, the plane might have landed safely, but the long distance combined with the loss of hydraulic fluid made it impossible. Even so, thanks to the pilots' skill and the quality of the airframe, there was a truly remarkable number of survivors.

The E190 took potentially 2 x SAMs and still kept flying, the crew did a remarkable job.

It has not been a good week for commercial aircraft!

The E190 is an awesome aircraft, there was that incident in Europe where the maintenance crew attached the flight control cables opposite, the plane went inverted several times and was able to land still. The plane was scrapped after for safety as there were many cracks in the spars of the wings etc, prayers to the victims. The crew did an awesome job of trying to keep the plane airborne.

A quick addition. The ATC at no point prohibited landing. It was low IFR weather. Because of GPS spoofing and ILS not available at the time there were only able to shoot NDB approach there. They tried few approaches, but with no success(cloud base was quite low). Than missile thing happened. Pilots ( I bet they never thought about missiles) reported that they hit a birds ( This is why it went to the news media) and were asking for weather in airports around the area. Which ATC was provided to them and giving vectors. ATC as well didn't know what's going on because they are civil guys and not really in contact with military people. All area around this airport is a mountainous area with low IFR. Plus they got decompression so you don't want to fly low with mountains around. This is why I thought they decided to go over Caspian sea and land in flat surface with not many buildings around. Crew really taking super smart decisions for the situation. I really doubt they knew what actually happened to the plane. Also, it is just my speculation, but probably hydraulics was leaked out not immediately, but gradually. So they probably have some controls, but slowly, maybe one by one systems started degrading while they were on the way to alternate. But to know exactly have to wait for official report. Thank you guys, love the show!

If there is one thing Brazilians can be proud of is Embraer

Let’s take a second and thank the incredible pilots for putting the plane down softly enough to save many lives. They had to know they would not be among the survivors, and yet they fought for every life possible.

1:09 Reading comprehension is not Mover's strong suit.
38 fatalities, 29 survivors.

Ive got 1, 000 hours in that type. Great airplane. kind of unique in that the elevators are fly-by-wire but the ailerons are cable. So in the loss of hydraulics its possible they may have had some roll control but really unlikely they had pitch.

Hi all. Been working in the industry for 15 years. I have a friend who flew the 190s for B6. He mentioned the 190's ailerons have a cable with limited control but the rest of the systems were Fly By Wire.

And an aircraft that has declared and emergency can’t be denied. Should never be denied. They become priority.

I was impressed that there were survivors, as well. I always fly on Embraer, if possible. I like a smaller plane.

Russia, when you’re at war, close you air space to civilian traffic, divert the aircraft.

if there is any one lesson that must be drawn, it is this: For all of the technical wizardry and the talk of automated systems, they are only good until they fail. That's why we need highly trained extremely competent PILOTS to deal with the situation when the sh!t hits the fan and turn death into a fighting chance to live.

4:40 Exactly - why is an airline flying in a warzone. That's the question. And it keep coming up.

Not taking ownership of this, doesn't change the fact it happend, it's somthing you expect from a child, not a full grown adult, but it seems to be a growing trend evidently

When I found out that the Russians sent this airliner across the sea and forbade it from landing at their airports, I was very upset. This is the highest level of bastardism.

It reminds me the USS Vincennes when it shot down an Iranian airbus full of civilians over the Persian Gulf. Fatal mistakes are due to happen when you mix civil and military people over a war zone. Today after a 250 million upgrade an Aegis ship destroyed one F18 and shot another F18…
