Those pilots fought that plane for the longest 20 minutes of their lives. They are heroes for saving those they could. Condolences to the families of those lost.

These pilots did an amazing job to even get this aircraft close to an airport as well as missing any personnel on the ground. The term is used too often sometimes, these pilots are true heros. They never gave up and saved lives.

The fact that the pilots were able to save as many people as they could is incredible.

Pilots deserve posthumous recognition for even getting close to a runway. As i watched all the available footage yesterday i was also reminded of 232 and the impossible landing.

They were flying the crap out of an airplane that was a brick and saved a few lives in doing so. Bless them all.

When you see how hard it crashes, and the fireball, I'm amazed that anyone survived.

RIP to those who didn't.

Damm. They tried to do the impossible and tried as hard as they could and actually saved some life's pulling of this heroic feet of flying. My prayers go out to all families.

Lets acknowledge just how spectacular of a job these pilots did with the hand that was dealt them. Talk about having the most limited options with the best possible outcome all things considered! RIP to all lives lost!

The pilots did well on minimising the casualties. Blessed the star of this tragedy.

I couldn't believe it when I saw the photos and the passenger testimony of those onboard. I had elthe exact same stomach churning feeling as I did when MH17 was shot down.
The pilot did an absolutely amazing job of trying to get this one down. He came so close to saving everyone 😥

I'm a former Air Astana 190 pilot, landed at Aktau many times. The jet has a FBW tail, but there are cables for the ailerons that will control them if hydraulic power is lost. Looks like they lost control of the ailerons by the end. I have 5, 500 hours on these. Edit to add that amazingly Embraer run a conventional cable system right out to the ailerons but it isn't physically connected to them despite the manual stating "a direct mechanical connection" exists between the yoke and the ailerons. So this is why they were unable to level the wings before they hit. Why Embraer go to all the trouble of running those steel cables out there and then don't attach them physically to the ailerons I will never know. I guess these guys were leaking hydraulic fluid and when it was gone, that was that.

After what this aircraft suffered, pilots did what they could and honestly performed as best as they could!

biggest respect to the pilots. they cannot control directions and can only control the angle of the plane by altering the throttle. it’s a miracle that they still saved more than half of the passengers on board.

The pilots of this flight are every bit the same heroes as Al Haynes and his crew. The fact that anyone survived if a tribute to their efforts. God bless them.

Being shot down on Christmas Day? What a nasty world we now live in.

One thing is for certain: The two pilots of this plane never gave up and kept on trying to land this crippled plane at the airport until they ran out of wiggle room and it settled onto a dirt field. They gave their lives trying to save others, and in the end they managed to save the lives of at least 29 people (and possibly 32, if reports of 3 additional people walking away unharmed, hence not being accounted-for among the 29 who were hospitalized, are true). They should be awarded posthumous medals for heroism, to be given to their next-of-kin.
