10 things we learned from the first F1 test of 2022

F1 didn't want to call its three days of pre-season running at Barcelona a 'test', but let's not pretend: this was F1 testing, pure and simple.
While the laptimes from any test can be spectacularly misleading, that doesn't mean everything that happens should be ignored. The Race had a team of people on the ground in Spain, watching from trackside, speaking. to people in the paddock, and monitoring all the data from Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
We're not about to tell you who is going to win the world championship, but here are the useful things we did learn.

I'm just really happy Ferrari and McLaren look quick. Hope the form continues until the actual season, and we'll get a Ferrari-McLaren championship battle.

I feel like not a lot of people are talking about Williams. They seem to be doing quite well not having any major issues with the car.

All these cars look stunning... they seem beautifully retro without all the veins and fins and yet they still look like modern masterpieces.

RB & MB coming to the second test with wildly different cars gives me 2019 vibes.

Who else REALLY loves seeing VET up there with RB and Ferrari? :)
Hell, tbh, I could also wish Lance to have some fast times to assist Seb there - he is a nice and humble kid and not that bad anymore.

I have a feeling reliability will play a big factor over the 1st half of the season

It's good to see Ferrari improving and showing the quality they have. They've got a great driver lineup, I hope they cleanup some of the race strategy errors of the past

You missed the most detailed driver feedback about ability to follow other cars which came from Leclerc:
"I'll say from three seconds to one second behind the car in front, you actually can follow closer. Then from one second to five tenths I will say it's similar to the feeling I had last year. And then from five tenths to extremely close, then this is much better than last year. It is nice, it's interesting. I mean, I'll have to do a few more laps behind a car, but it's looking good for now."

Aston Martin seemed to have improved and I’m glad. Just want Seb to have a good car!

i hope le clerc was right about his feedback on following cars: upto 3 seconds its easier to follow, upto a second to half a second, just as hard as last year, but within half a second its easier again.

I like to think the organizing body had aesthetic considerations when they formulated the new rules. The cars look great. And thank you Ferrari for using that darker, richer. more traditional Rosso rather than the orangy dayglo hue they've used in the past. The new Williams livery is especially becoming, as are the lines of most cars, especially the Aston Martin. The cars are also exhibiting a welcome range of form, although this is bound to lessen as the teams find out what works best. I like the rule changes- the cars look better and the main intent- making iit easier to pass, seems to have worked. This should be a good season.

Looking forward to the first race to see how these cars perform. Nice video. Keep up the good work.

Hamilton saying his team doesn’t make mistakes reminds me of Toto saying Hamilton’s brake magic error wasn’t a mistake.

No idea who’s quicker but hope we get plenty of contenders for race wins

If haas leave F1, this is the PERFECT opportunity for Andretti to join the grid

I stand on my idea of there being a four way battle for both championships . I don’t believe redbull and mercs will only themselves to worry about . And I’m all for it . Let’s go 2022!

The fact that both Ferrari engine customers have struggled so much, while Ferrari has achieved pretty good success surprises me. Especially since they had so much more development time

Lap time in testing (or practice) still matters.

If you're spending that much time running so many different programs through multiple days, at some point there would still be a glimpse of real pace reflected on your lap time. If you're at the bottom for 3 whole days consistently or vice versa (or not even have much actions because of issues), it's already a good enough reference of where you're at on the grid.

With porpoiseing what are the possibilities for active suspension coming back if the rules are changed. I am sure some teams would back it or push for change on the idea of safety
