Arthur C Clarke's diving partner discovered a sunken ship with a cargo of silver coins off the coast of Sri Lanka. At a Canadian battlefield from the War of 1812, it is illegal to dig in the park, but not in the woods behind the park. The park is manicured and sodded with dirt brought in from who-knows-where, so it contains absolutely no artifacts from the war. I used to "treasure hunt" in the woods, and the person I was with found two musketballs. He never reported them. He has since passed away, but I know that his family still has them.

Any "research" value that could possibly be extracted from a horde of gold coins can just as easily be extracted from a single one of those coins, or even a handful.
