Explore the science behind how your body and brain process different sensations like touch, pain, temperature, and spatial awareness.

--

We don’t often think of touch as being a vital part of movement, but touch is one part of a network that oversees all the sensations arising from the surface and interior of our bodies. Touch, pain, temperature, and our spatial awareness are regulated by this system. So, how exactly do our brains process these sensations? And what happens when something goes wrong? Antonio Cataldo investigates.

Lesson by Antonio Cataldo, directed by Yuriy Polyashko, Darvideo Animation Studio.

As someone who experienced nerve damage after a broken ankle which caused numbness, I can say it’s really scary not being able to feel ANYTHING in my foot.

It's crazy how many things we take for granted until we lose them.

Fascinating. Can you imagine not knowing where your limbs were without actually *seeing* where they were?

If not for this era of science,
I would have died without learning so much about this beautiful system we

"Even if it can be tough to put your finger on."

Omg the touchscreen visual at the end was so small but genius!

it's something very small but I love how y'all always find a quote for the beginning of the videos that match the theme!

I had a wisdom tooth removed and the surgent hit a nerve. This caused a part of my lower lip to lose its ability to feel pain, pressure, touch, and temperature. I can still move it like normal.
After over a year, I gain some feeling of pain and pressure, but it is very faint.

I think I heard about that guy on an episode on Radio Lab. Fascinating how the body can adapt and compensate for loss of certain functions. Not that it didn't take amazing effort and willpower to overcome!

I had a mild stroke 9 years ago and for a couple of weeks I lost all feeling on the left side of my body. I could still move and walk but like the video describes, I had to watch my left hand to know what it was doing. If I picked something up, I didn't know how tightly I was gripping it so if I stopped watching it, I would drop things. Luckily my feeling came back. A man in my stroke recovery group never got his feeling back on one side and he accidentally burned his 'unfeeling' hand really badly on a grill. he didn't feel it but eventually noticed the smell of his burning hair and looked down.

So cool. By the way, I have difficulty communicating because I had a stroke in Broca’s area, the part of the brain that controls speech. 2/8/2021 but I lived again. (My wife helped me compose this.)

Thank you for his video !! this will be very useful to teach people about losing the sense of touch.
Sometimes, I asked my friends which sense would they pick if they have to sacrifice one, and I'm often surprised that some people choices the sense of touch as an easy answer for this question.

Wow...This dude, I didn't even know that it's so important for us to feel the body parts in space. Nevertheless, the human body is capable of much and can be considered a real treasure of nature. Seriously, I am surprised by such a complex and thought out to the smallest detail system. Even if something breaks, the body always finds a way out. Videos like this make me appreciate my body even more.😏
