This feels like realizing you’re in a codependent relationship and slowly developing the courage to escape it.

1 of my interpretations of this song: a domestically abusive relationship where the abuser was actually the first one to leave, making the victim think back on the memories in a bittersweet way, thinking back on the way they depended on the person. Realizing that there was so much they missed, and that that person was their world. But after thinking back, they are thankful that person left.

Two lovers are often described as the Sun and the Moon, circling around each other. Except the Moon doesn't circle with the Sun, it circles around the Earth and the Sun. It only shines from the light given from the Sun, it shines only with the light it gave it.

I see a lot of people interpreting this song as an abusive romantic relationship, which is probably what it is, but I interpret it as the relationship of the golden child(moon) and the rest of the family(sun) and how the child is realizing that they never had a choice in anything

"We walked in the dark, in the dark
I never gave a single thought to where it might lead"

That line is the family leading the child down the path of "success" without giving the child a choice.

Years pass and the child realizes that their own childhood wasn't their own.

"The moon will sing a song for me, I loved you like the sun
Bore the shadows that you gave, with no light of my own"

The child loved their family, they still do, but they realize that the only reason they were "successful" as a child is because their family forced them to, so they don't feel like anything of theirs is actually theirs.

This feels like an appropriate song for if you were sitting in a bay window and looking out at the night, it’d be late and the outside would be empty and the night would be quiet.

I heavily relate to this song as I used to assign stars to people I loved in my life, I always left the sun out of it, because I’d be earth, and my lover would be the sun, and we’d depend on eachother. When the sun would explode we’d both go down, it was supposed to be for my ride or die.

I always interpreted this as a child who had a neglectful and/or overbearing parent (yes you can have both at once)

Strike me as someone looking back on their childhood and realising how much their parent robbed them of, how their parent moulded them into someone they never wanted to be, and how much they loved the person who abused them and how much they still love them despite it

many people are interpreting this song as an abusive relationship, and it would make sense! but mine is a little different. i dont know what it is but the part "I loved you like the sun" and "I shine only with the light you gave me" could fit the abuse narrative but for me it feels more like they broke up with someone they loved so deeply, who made them open up and feel so powerful. but when they left the person felt alone and empty, like they couldn't shine on their own. but also towards the end it leads up into them forcing themselves to burn on their own- which is cool. :)

This makes me think of being a kid and not being able to have a say in where you are or how you're treated by your parents. The line I want to feel the fire you kept from me feels like a kid trying to be confident after leaving a narcissistic parent who wouldn't let them go against them at all and the moon watching and singing for the child

Me and my ex girlfriend often liked to depict ourselves as the Sun and Moon. We live on total opposite sides of the earth. She was the Moon and I was the sun.. But I never saw myself as the Sun. It was because of her that I shined as brightly as I did. It was because of her that I was able to become the loving and caring person I am today.

My interpretation of the song was that there was a couple, not an abusive relationship
But, I think the person (the moon) was somewhat depressed or stressed because of office problems, family problems, and any problems. But he\she had a lover which is the sun. The sun was the only reason why the moon lived like the moon was emotionally dependent on the sun. It's like the moon can't live without the sun.

it looks like the moon was thanking the sun for everything she or he made and being his or her lover. I think the person(the sun) dies leaving the moon behind. The moon will not shine anymore, nor made himself/ herself happy unlike the sun did.

My interpretation of this song is someone in a relationship (the moon) has had so much help from their parter (the sun) to achieve what they want in life to the point where the moon is no longer able to see anything as totally their own or that being around the sun has changed them to the point that they are not showing who they really are but what the sun wants/shows them to be.

Anyways I love the crane wives very much this songs is one of my favorites ever, listen to the crane wives
