It happens. Sometimes you need to tap out during a tattoo

My anxiety won't let me tap out. I will literally tell you "I'm fine. Keep going." With tears streaming down my face because I hate inconveniencing my artist.

My artist literally had to tap out for me. Because I wanted to go all day. But he was saying how badly my skin was reacting and if I went any longer in my sessions. My skin would be traumatized

Edit: Just want to clear a few things incase some wanna try and discredit or rag on my artist. Him tapping me out the first session was for the safety of my skin. After we found out how my skin reacted and how best to go about it, sessions went perfectly and he was able to do amazing work. I have a skin disease known as ichthyosis. He's the first artist I've had that actually took the time to learn and manage how my skin reacted in order to give their best work. All other artists I've went to just told me to power through it and that this type of thing happens. Which isn't true at all (atleast regarding how I specifically react) The piece came out amazing. I love it and I'm really happy he is my artist. I'll be going to him for majority of my larger pieces.

I got my ribs tattooed for my first tattoo, I managed to get about 85% done but I tapped out because my body started getting really bad shakes and my tattoo artist advised I stopped. That's how u know the artist actually cares about their client

If I needa tap (or more like ask for a break) I try to wait until they have some section of progress finished, like the last guy said it's prolly annoying to do a section and not be able to finish before taking a break so I try to be considerate of the artist and their process and not make them stop in the middle of line work or shading a major spot, only time I had to take a break was for the piece on the inside of my elbow and I wanted until he had finished the entire outline and I was like "hey before you start shading can I take a quick smoke break" but tbh breaks don't even help it usually makes it worse all artists will tell you the same

I've only tapped out once, but it was a kinda big tattoo going over lots of scarring. Really need to get it finished lol

i sit the whole time until the artist is finished. it's amazing what a skilled tattoo artist can accomplish in 6+ hours if left to do their thing.

I didn't mind the pain, but still felt faint toward the end of the middle of my rather small tattoo on my forearm. Not sure why. Maybe my brain was just like "it's already inflamed, you're going to pass out now so you stop messing with it more" only had that happen one other time after I was digging dirt out of a cut on my finger for a good 20 minutes in the hot sun. I was well behaved, sitting calmly, just got deep in a couple spots and it was like "yeeahh, no". Finished the lines but didn't want him to color it in then

I never tapped out but once my artist tapped me out herself, she noticed i was swelling up more than nornal and felt like i would probably reject too much ink and stopped, going for longer times isnt always a good plan, a good artist knows

Y’all I’m assuming and HOPING “tapping out” means stopping for a break and not my initial assumption that it means fainting because the comments here sound horrifying if it does mean fainting 😭

I've never tapped out but sessions have ended because my artist decided my skin couldn't handle any more at the time lol

I have two sleeve tattoos I got to remember my grandparents, and a giant compass on my back to honor my father (he’s still alive). A sleeve on my right arm of a carp for my grandfather, representing strength and prosperity. And a sleeve on my left arm of himiwari flowers, they were her favorite. (Oh I’m Japanese btw if this is confusing). And a compass pointing north on my back so I always walk forward. My dad has the exact same tattoo. Anyway these tattoos didn’t hurt at all, and I spent thousands on each one to make sure the quality was unmatched. They are seriously works of art, not a cent wasted. And last one is a small bottle of vintage jack Daniels, my grandfather’s favorite whiskey, right above my heart. To remember when we used to sit out and drink with each other.

I get my tattoos done by a friend, and even when she wasn't actually my friend and was just a tattoo artist i went to, she always communicates and lets you communicate back, and as she knows i do have quite sensitive skin, (it raises alot higher and quicker than normal people when they get tattoos) she always lets me have a break if i need. And talks to me thoughout the tattoo.
Like say if she just finished the line art she stops, and asks what i would eant to do next and this actually really helps me because i trnd to not know exactly what i want even when getting it done.
For example, i just got a tattoo done for mt cat who recently passed away, and i wasn't zure if i wanted shading or not (as she was a black cat) so i decided for now leave the shading out and decide another time.
And she was the one who actually suggested this as well.
