Ben's distinction between the political spectrum of Europe and the US is absolutely correct therefore American right wingers should be more careful with backing European right wingers (some of them are quite awul - and I am saying that as a very conservative Europen).

What a load of BS. This idea that "libertarianism = right and authoritarianism = left" is an absolute joke.
How can anyone take Ben seriously on this. Just accept that there are bad rightwing ideologies, it's not that hard. There are also bad leftwing ideologies, you don't have any issues calling them out.

This is an important point of nuance. A conservative in the former soviet union is a hardliner which yearns for the Soviet Union, while a liberal is someone who should have the support of American conservatives. Conservatives in Saudi Arabia are the antithesis of a western Conservative. It's all about context.

Better question is why does everyone forget about the Y axis on the political spectrum? Communism and Fascism are just two sides of the authoritarian coin and that is why people think they are so similar.

Fascism isn't a left or right ideology. It's an authoritarian ideology. You can argue that Stalin was a fascist.

Fascism IS a left wing ideology. The Nazi's were not conservatives, the supporters of Hindenburg would have been the conservatives in 1930's Germany, the Nazi's were revolutionaries:
