GDPR is really just common sense put into a law. For most part, the GDPR requires a company to know where their customers' data are, what exactly they do with it, how they protect it and how they can modify/delete some. If that is too much to ask, the company should just close and do something else.

This is why the U.S. needs a leader with the morals that coincide with Richard stallman.

Yes absolutely! The right to privacy is a critical human right and should be considered as such.

I work for a medium size software company that has a global customer base. Thankfully our legal team was able to sort through the mess. A major concern wasn't enforcement by the EU or other local domain, but potential trolls who could file suit, or at least waist your time, if you didn't bother to update your policies.

Few things about GDPR:
It doesn't really stop all the data harvesting and targetted advertising that people take issue with, it just makes it so the company has to inform you that they're gonna be selling your data off. Most people who want to actually continue using various websites like google, facebook, twitter, etc will have to accept the terms anyway, so nothing really changed.
Smaller companies now have to hire a GDPR officer to make sure they are conforming to standards, which is an extra salary that they may never have needed to pay otherwise.
Companies who use mailing lists will need to re-obtain consent to continue using the contacts on the list. For smaller companies, this may mean losing a significant portion of the people on their mailing lists.
These laws don't really address the main problems people had with data privacy, such as NSA/GCHQ collecting every piece of data ever without warrant, companies like Facebook using data for targeted marketing and, in the case of Cambridge analytica, targeted propaganda. Will the EU ever implement laws to address this stuff? Realistically, no. Selling data is the business model for companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft etc, and so laws that stop this would make it almost impossible for them to turn a profit. The EU, being the neo-liberal stronghold that it is, would never do anything like this. This law is a big smokescreen for the inaction of the EU and other govt's

Working for an international company I had to be trained on the gdpr and I wish we had one. The right to be forgotten and the right to transfer your info to another provider sound great.

Can you explain what exactly is in the law? I know it’s supposed to give us more privacy protection, but what does that mean?

NOOO. GDPR destroys online marketing which is a great tool for individuals to create wealth for themselves. It bans giving people incentives to opt in to your email list. In the ecommerce world, the email list is like the holy grail for revenue.

Automation to make everything we want.
Our metadata are the currency of that economy.
Functional, practical near Utopia.

So fuck yes. If my metadata are valuable to you...and we're in a capitalist economy... you better pay me for them.

We need federal ids and better privacy laws. It doesn't matter what they do with your personal information now so long as you're identity can be stolen by an insecure number that anyone can guess if they know where and when you were born for all but the last 4 digits.. you know, the ones you give to the bank or credit card company over the phone to identify yourself.

With all the flat Earth theories floating around, is it safe to assume you are not on the FE bandwagon given the fact you have what appears to be a rotating Earth over your right shoulder???

Hell no, have you read any of the stories coming out of Europe? There is no way anyone can comply with it.
