I first visited London in June 2015, flying from Melbourne where I had spent a day skiing the week before. I was appaled by the climate, over 30 degrees for all of the nine days I was there, topping out at 36. When I returned to southern Australia, I told my friends that Britain was actually a dry and scorching hot country and that they should not believe the stories about it being cool and wet.

Two days 40 degrees. Too short to discuss about. Let's See how Long this lasts.

So we get 2 days of hot weather and some how it’s a disaster. But thousands of Uk people travel to hotter countries every summer! Enjoy.

It's not just people that can suffer and even die in an extreme heat wave. Plants and trees can also suffer from heat stress and die quickly. I lived for many years in Washington DC which is the begiining of the warm climate zone in the US. People who planted more northerly trees like maples and paper birch regularly saw their trees thrive for a few years only to be killed in just a few days in the very hot heat waves that occurred every few years. Heat waves that were in the low to mid 30's, not close to 40! It will be interesting to see if there are plant causalties from the extreme heat gripping the UK.

Paris as other cities have reduced the heat island effect by planting more trees in the city. i suggest also to not cut the grass all the time. Grass will also reduce the heat island effect & allow wild life to live. The pollution of buildings & vehicles also increases the City heat island effect.

If England built train tracks out of cheap materials that will bend in this heat, one has to wonder if the tall buildings are at risk.

It’s amazing how millions of Brits haven’t died overseas in Spain and Portugal every year. I haven’t heard more tripe in all my days

Next step will be a heat tax for the people going outside and increasing the heat by just exhaling air from their lungs which is very hot

Howabout we change the shopping hours in the UK during June, July, and August, and break the day up into two parts.

First part - 8am to 12 midday
Second part - 4pm to 8pm....for all but the smallest shops. It's an idea. May be a bonkers one but it still needs given consideration to.

In southern Europe, shops close at midday and dint open again told 4 or 5 in the afternoon. They are closed during the hottest part of the day. Shops therefore open earlier.

Alot of people will say we could never do something like this in the UK, but if Spain and other countries can do it, then so can we. It clearly works for why can't it work for us too? ....no doubt people will list all the excuses as to why we can't/shouldn't do this but it may just be the way the summer months.

Come September, shops could revert back to the traditional 9 - 5 or 6 opening hours. Seriously, I don't see why we can't adopt this here.

People would just have to get used to no shops (apart from food places and some supermarkets staying open during these middle of the day hours). It would require abit of forward planning by people.

Look at it on the brighter side, it's too hot for the knife attackers to be roaming the streets.
