Instead, try asking, 'Why do so many people refuse to believe that powerful, intelligent people do bad things and try to cover it up?'

What I find interesting. Is that back in the day, before the internet. Sources for knowledge was harder to come by. You had to go to the library and search (ref walk rolleyes) for stuff, BUT most of the time the sources you did find was of higher quality than you generally do now on the internet unless one is very source critical.

This however. Had the effect that people trusted their sources from the get go and once the internet started to be used at my school and people used sources on there. A few of them just gave you the big ? face when you asked how well they researched and double check the sources they use for whatever. Obviously, knowing that their sources must have been less than stellar from get go and it was the reason you asked....

So, do I have any point to this?
Yes, its that skepticism and critical thinking needs to be addressed within schooling so everyone learns it. There is 1000x times more BS in better packaging out there now than before.

I don't get the stigma around conspiracy theories. Not all of them are crazy barking mad ones some of them are pretty reasonable and have evidence to prove it.

Fun fact about seat belts: when more people start to were them far more car crash victims end up in emergency rooms, which seems bad until you realize that it's because far fewer end up in the funeral.

In a nutshell, people believe in conspiracies because its easier to believe that somebody's conspiring against you than admit you're wrong or everything doesn't always happen for a reason.

"They’ve made "Conspiracy" something that can’t even be entertained for a minute – that powerful people might get together and have a plan? Doesn’t happen! You’re a kook, you’re a conspiracy buff!" (George Carlin)

Actually most people do not "believe" or research conspiracy theories, and will instead carelessly label them as being irrelevant simply because of its "ridiculous" connotation; even if that is not always the case. The real question is why do so many people like conspiracy theories regarding, say video games and pop culture for example, but despise those concerning real life problems? The simply answer is one's inclination towards comfort and cognitive dissonance, which is frequent among the majority.

Why do so many people try and push the narrative that no Conspiracies ever happen?

They happen all the time.
