COVID-19 Crisis: Role of World Health Organisation

Role of WHO:
monitor the world health situation.
Prevent any outbreak
Director general is from Ethiopia. this is the first time that the director-general of WHO is a politician.

A Pandemic the world hasn't seen in the past 100 years.

Issues: PPEs not available, frontline testing kits.
WHO depends on countries for the information.

Steps to be taken:
1. IPCC- take some systems from it. It gets scientists and experts from across the world to do research. Same can be done with WHO. Get doctors, epidemiologists etc together.
2. Transparency. Systemic cross-checking and assessment.
3. Countries to step up with the contribution and not to withdraw.

Way forward:
1. More funding in the R&D
2. Vaccine for the pandemic.
3. Strengthen multilateralism
4. Reforms within WHO
5. Transparency and proper work flow.
6. Better sharing of information between countries.

In globalized worlds of today, multilateral institutions like WHoO are inevitable. Though there were issues of transparency and neutrality with the WHO leadership, it has tried to curb infodemic by giving timely guidelines later on. Holding of funds by US again proves such institutions are vulnerable politically, hence bodies Ike IPCC are required. At the end, transparency, objectivity and proactiveness at country level in fluid flow of info are norms to deal with such pandemics.

Honestly, it needed lot of concentration actually in order to listen this debate, seems like video conferencing is not proving to be that effective.
Secondly, going forward, I think our government should also invest more on health infrastructure in nearby future because in future, i think there going to be biological war than nuclear or some other non-conventional one.
Therefore, India must be prepared for that

although its not right to complain about the quality of feed at this it does show our poor digital and internet setup though. these people who come into the show are the privileged section of our nation. Its sad that some random YouTubers doing Movie trailer reactions with friends (using similar video conferences) have better video and audio quality.
