"You don't feel dumb and you don't get bored." Honestly the best selling point and so true 👌🏼

Couldn't agree more with everything you said 😂😂 The part I love the most was definitely the characters and the different cultures. I wish it was longer!!

Great review!! I still don't know if I'll be picking it up any time soon just because of that page count but it's great to hear that it's accessible prose. I never like things are SUPER detailed so that's a plus for me.

I got slightly worried now, I was indeed expecting GoT level politics 😅 I will have to adjust my expectations before going into it. It makes me happy to hear that we aren't joining in their entire traveling though, because that is really one of my pet peeves!

Hmmm. Okay this will help me prioritize this book on my Master TBR. I am still super curious to read it, but based off how you feel, I have others I'm more interested to get to first.
I'm stoked to hear the author wrote so well that you could "see" it unfold in your mind's eye. That's how reading always works for me, so I bet I'll have an amazing experience with it.
It's also good to know about the pacing...that's important when reading a chunker. THANK GOODNESS about the journey....I find that so boring, filler material if you will.
Thank you so much for this review, I have been dying for it since I saw you startes it. 😊

You're not the only person I've heard say that it would have been better off as a duology. I didn't know there was a plague element in this, but that increases my interest for sure.

Wow, 800 pages is a huge investment or gamble for such a polarizing book. I’m not sure I understood your comment on plague and being related to fire magic. That sounds interesting if you’re saying the magic was created as a byproduct of a plague or vice versa. I love learning about legendary characters through others like the queen. Makes them seem so much more powerful kind of like Sauron from Lord of the Rings. I’m the same way with intense descriptions and it not translating to my brain always. I like just simple one or two items to describe them.

I agree with you in that I don't think it's a great book, but I don't believe it's as bad as some reviews make out. (Maybe a 3.5 to 4 for me.) It definitely reads fast for an 800+ page book, helped by short chapters, a fair degree of mystery and doing it as a buddy read. There are some issues I had as a I read, such as plot coincidences and a lack of motivation for the Big Bad, but I generally enjoyed it as I was reading, particularly Ead's chapters. The resolution did feel a bit too quick, but the ending for each character seemed appropriate. I liked the religious aspects even though the world itself was (understandably for a St George and the Dragon reinterpretation) similar to our own. Overall, I think it's enjoyable as you read, but less so if you start to think about it afterwards. I'm glad I read it, but it's certainly not The Fifth Season (my only 5* book this year) where I couldn't see anything wrong with the book at all.

How in the world are all these books secretly about plagues and pandemics. I feel like every other story I'm picking up is low key a virus/disease book haha

I'm thinking from this review I might actually like this. I had previously written it off. Maybe my only concern is that I don't mind travel stories and those "boring" moments if they are done well.

I have been on the fence with this book for a long time. I just don"t know if I will enjoy it.
