That feel when "your interpretation doesn't make modern readers comfortable" apparently has higher priority than reading what the text is actually saying.

I like how this creator is essentially telling you to lie for Jesus.

Bible: _What I want to say is..._
Dogmatic Believer: _Thanks, babe. I'll take over from here. What the Bible wants to say is..._

One thing I have learned from practicing and studying Buddhism, oddly enough, is people have their own dogmas based on the traditions and lineages of interpretation. That creates a set of beliefs and assumptions people wrap up in their identity. To say "let's go back to what the person likely said, " is to let people know they might be wrong in this lineage of tradition and interpretation.

Frank Herbert wrote about this in his Dune. He created a thing in his world called the Missionaria Protectiva, instructions for religious engineering. One quote from that passage goes something like this:

If you believe in certain words, you believe their hidden arguments. Those arguments are often full of holes, but remain precious to the convinced.

Data and/or facts are kryptonite to some people.

This is like actually listening to Bart Ehrman and then understanding why many of his students actually found thier faith strengthened. Listening to Dan actually strengthens the idea that people have wrestled and reasoned with thier views and understanding of God and the Scripture ever since the creation of Scripture. The Text is not God and neither is the Dogma ❤

Man it's crazy how a deep belief can diminish or destroy one's ability to comprehend simple things.

To translate it to current memes: "You think The Bible just fell out of a coconut tree? The Bible exists in the context of all in which you live and what came before you." Very demure. Very mindful.

Scripture cannot be strengthened or weakened. It is what it is. A given interpretation of it can be strengthened or weakened, based on either data or dogmatism. This is a difficult lesson for some to learn.

I rather think that its this apologist (and apologists generally) is disrespecting the text. Given that misrepresentation is the highest form of disrespect.

As a person who totally disrespects the bible, I can confirm that Dan does not disrespect the bible.

This guy is not going to be happy about this video. Can't wait to see what he comes up with next.

I love the fact that he talks about weakening scripture when the only context in which is can be considered weak or strong is a dogmatic and subjective one.

These unfortunate people have never seen an example of impartial scholarship or logical argument before and they have no idea how to deal with it.

Words’ definition change based around their context. For example, when someone uses the word “respect, ” they will either mean “respect” or they will mean “obey” and the only way to discern which they mean is to examine the surrounding context
