US, South Korean troops Conduct joint Military Drills

South Korean and US troops staged joint military drills to check the company-level combat capabilities of the rotational deployment unit, the US Army said on July 31amid tensions on the Korean peninsula. Video footage released by the US Army showed South Korean and U.S. soldiers conducting a Combined Arms Live Fire Exercise (CALFEX) at the Rodriguez Live Fire Complex in Pocheon, north of Seoul, less than 30 km (19 miles) from the heavily fortified border with North Korea. The drills that began on July 22 will continue until August 3, the army said. Pyongyang has long condemned such joint military drills as rehearsals for war, while Seoul has portrayed the exercises as purely defensive.
