The South Korean Navy is conducting a joint military exercise with Japan and the United States.

South Korea's defense ministry said Friday that it is conducting a missile-warning exercise with Japan and the United States, just a day after the release of various media reports saying that North Korea had developed two additional intercontinental ballistic missiles.
The exercise, which runs from Friday to Sunday in waters near South Korea and Japan, is the third combined exercise of its kind since June of 2016... and the first of this year.
The defense chiefs from South Korea and the U.S. had previously agreed to make the exercise part of their regular drills with Japan.
South Korean Navy officials said that this year's exercise will rely solely on virtual simulations, while last year's had involved the use of drones as a substitute for North Korean projectiles, which could then be used to test the military's detection and tracking capabilities.
This year's exercise will again involve one vessel from each country: South Korea will deploy the 76-hundred-ton Sejong the Great destroyer, which is equipped with the Aegis combat system.
The United States will send its 88-hundred-ton USS Curtis Wilbur, which had been previously deployed to the South China Sea to monitor China's activity in the region, while Japan will send its Kirishima Aegis destroyer.
South Korean military officials also said they will try to push for more of these kinds of military exercises this year, saying that previous ones had been very helpful to all three nations.
"News of the naval exercise comes just one day after South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said that it believes North Korea is fully capable of launching an intercontinental ballistic missile 'anytime and anywhere' based on the decision of its leader.
