Ontology defined

Ontology is derived from the greek: Ontos meaning That which is, or Being and Logia, meaning Word, or to talk. So it is the study of being. What is the very fabric of being itself, and how can we classify it?

For instance, the pre-socratic philosopher Thales believed that the whole universe was made up by different compositions of water. So a stone is just more dense water.
