Biden introduces Zelensky as ‘President Putin’ in major gaffe
Показать описание
Joe Biden referred to Volodymyr Zelensky as “President Putin” when he introduced the Ukrainian leader during a crucial speech at the Nato summit in Washington, DC.
The US President committed the gaffe at a time when he is under intense pressure to drop out of the presidential race, follwoing a disastrous performance in a debate against Donald Trump last month.
Six Democrats in the House of Representatives were expected to be closely watching Mr Biden today, preparing to call on him to stand aside if he performed badly. More than a dozen have already called on him to step down.
“Ladies and gentlemen, President Putin,” Mr Biden said, referring to the Russian leader who invaded Ukraine two years ago.
The 81-year-old started to make way for Mr Zelensky at the podium before realising his mistake and moving back to the microphone.
“President Putin? President Zelensky… I’m so focused on beating Putin,” he said.
