Use Your Smartphone As a Camera Monitor | Average Filmmaker

The inbuilt monitor in cameras is usually terrible when shooting videos. A dedicated video monitor can also be VERY EXPENSIVE! So a better and cheaper option is to use your smartphone as a camera monitor. In this video, I will show you how!

◄The Parts I Use In This Video►
(some parts are not exactly the same that I use. I had parts lying around. But it should work as good.)

In general, there are two options when it comes to using the phone as a camera monitor. You can use Wi-Fi or use a capture card an OTG cable and an HDMI cable to connect the camera to the phone. The con with using the WI-FI is that you can control the camera but usually you get more latency and it's only working if your camera is supporting that function. Using the other method works on all cameras that have an HDMI output. Making a DIY video monitor for around 30-40 bucks is a good deal.

In this video, I will show how to connect everything together and what app you can use on your phone to display the images from the camera.

These output max 1080p 30 fps. If I am shooting 1080p 60, then how will it affect my shooting? If I buy the USB 3 ones which output 1080p 60 on my smartphone with USB2, will it work? thanks.

Hi, I have Canon M50 and tried to connect the camera to my phone with the app you are suggesting, and didn't work. I plugged cable micro HDMI to the camera, then the HDMI end to a converter (HDMI to USB type C) which I plugged into my phone. Do you think the length of the cable affects the connection? My cable is 2 meters long. Thank you for the video.

Thank you so much for the info. I have two questions. My camera is a Panasonic G-9. I do not like working through wi-fi with my phone. the connection often breaks. Please tell me, in order to broadcast to the phone from the camera via hdmi, will I need to install the application on the phone? What specific package of cords or adapters do I need?
I hope for your help. I wish you creative success and joy.
