Want to recommend "a lot of soap, a little water at a time" as a general method. Matt is used to this stuff, for most beginners I think it makes more sense to GRADUALLY add water and swirl on for a solid minute or two until you get the consistency you want. Easiest with a "croap" right from the tub (if the tub is big enough, otherwise scoop some out into a dedicated shaving bowl - in that situation same thing applies, scoop over a little at a time, add more only as needed). Also, Proraso can be a little bit tricky - it's a bit "lumpy" and it requires very little water. So you're not going nuts if it doesn't work perfectly immediately. Very little water, a lot of soap, patience.

I feel almost obligated to make a dirty joke after he said “generous squirt” 😂 maybe it can be combined with the “dad tool” reference.

I scoop and bowl lather. I've found the key is spreading the soap out in the bowl, nice and thin, and put in .25 - .5 teaspoon of water to let it bloom while showering. I then add very small amounts of water as I lather. I build a very thick lather in a short time.

Great video, Matt.

I have used all the soaps you demonstrated and because I saw you a while back demonstrate building a great lather right on your face I had to try it and it worked great for any soaps I use. Saves time less equipment needed now I learned from your video that I need to add a little water and build the lather from there. Love your video's, I learn a lot and it's great to try different products you demonstrate. Thanks Andy

I have been shaving 50 years and I learned something. Thanks. But have to say I have never had an issue with Mitchell’s being tough to lather. One of my favorites.

It's taken me 2 years to feel confident lathering all the ways you've shown in your video. I started out with a set that had a hard soap in a mug. Then I face lathered harder soaps. Only in the past year have I used creams. The white proraso is my choice travel soap. Good video once again.

The first soap I used was a hard puck and it lathered well. I am fortunate that I had access to videos for advice before I started wet shaving. It helped a lot and I had a great experience from the start.

Thanks Matt, much appreciated. I am relatively new to DE shaving. I started out shaving using a straight razor and soft lard or grease. Today at 79 I am not as steady anymore so went to a DE razor. Thanks to your great products and videos I have made a smooth transition.

Just got back into wet shaving after many years of not wet shaving. Started back up with a puck that came with a shave kit. Gonna try all the other lather products you featured—having fun on return to the wet side!!

The thing I agree with out of this video is it takes way less time to get a good lather than some people seem to think. Pay attention to what you are doing and look for the lather you want and then you are good.

I keep a puck of Mitchell's in an old, Old Spice cup. Have used it for 20 years, almost my entire time shaving, 42, started at 14.

MWF is the easiest and simply the quintessential shaving soap! Leaves your skin incredibly soft and smooth!

Excellent ! I thought it was just me making a huge mess, but I guess that’s what you need to do To get a lather.

I thought MWF was the hardest soap to get a lather out of, but you just disproved that! I currently only use MWF and have to bloom it, use a brush that's course enough to dig but still comfortable on the skin. It has been a journey, but the results are hard to beat!

Great video, all is possible:)
I find Colonel Conk to be a bit tricky. I like his bay rum, but it takes a bit of time to lather up

I use a bowl and lather on the face, best of both worlds. With a bowl, you're able to get the soap/water ratio just right and face lathering is a feel good experience for sure. Can't go wrong either way😉

I had the soap (not the Croap) first and with a little practice you can get pretty good lather with it. Thanks for showing other products.

Professor Matt strikes again. There’s a reason it’s called “Wet Shaving “. Hydration is the key

I'm only a couple of months into this game, but I will gladly take any lathering advice I can find! Thanks Matt!
