He makes Scarlatti sing, and even in these old recordings he makes the pedal sound as if it is breathing.

Vladimir Horowitz is one of the few pianists whose performances of Scarlatti truly honor the marvelous spirit of the music. Horowitz approaches these sonatas with the same heartfelt respect that he would give to Beethoven, Schumann, or Chopin. I have long believed that Scarlatti's sonatas possess real majesty that far too many pianists and harpsichordists fail to convey. The Scarlatti recordings by Horowitz are imbued with vitality and emotion that always moves me. Thank you for providing us with this wonderful recital.

I didn't think there were any recordings by Horowitz left I didn't know. How wonderful to hear his unique delicacy. (I have heard mention that there may in fact be x2 more Medtner fairytails in university archive somewhere. Very exciting thought.)

Astoundingly beautiful, as only Horowitz can render.

Phenomenal! The beauty, the natural simplicity, his smooth and seamless dynamics, the bell-like clarity of his sound, the singing legato, the transcendental virtuosity...
Somehow I still can not imagine these sonatas being played by someone else, although I know that's probably unfair.
Valid still after more than seventy yerrs.

Delightful. So much naturalness in his playing. A recording of Scarlatti sonatas by Maria Tipo from the '50s is another delight. The recording she made for EMI many years later is not at the same level.

Scarlatti is a mine field for mistakes. It is clean music and so even tiniest mistake is easy to hear. Horowitz was a Leviathan. Live. Hells bells.

Il est clair qu’Horowitz excellait dans ces sonates de Scarlatti où il se noyait avec délice.

It is a shame he never (as far as I know) recorded the C sharp minor, K 247/L 256 sonata.
