I'm afraid to prune my gardenia bush which i have had since a year ago last mother's Day and my son came over yesterday saying I still have a life and I really need to prune it and I'm just scared to touch it and I've watched all your videos and I'm still scared to prune it because it has these long stems with leaves at the top so where do I prune at because there is no leaves below

I live in Texas and as you may have heard we had a prolonged freeze of 5 days here in east Texas one over night we got to -1 f. My Gardenia Bush is in a northeast setting and suffered freeze damage. So I doubt I have to worry about cutting my buds. It currently stands about 5’ tall and WAS dense and lush last years with blooms as large as my hand. Now 75% of the leaves are brown. Should I leave it be? Will pruning stress it more? And if you recommend pruning how far back?
