Apple Vision Pro: explained in 60 sec

Apple just revealed the “Apple Vision Pro.” But they didn’t use the word “metaverse." Instead, they called this tech “spatial computing.”

Which makes sense, because these are an “augmented reality” headset, as opposed to fully “virtual reality”, like the ones you might have seen from Meta. Here's what that means and why it matters.

And if you love optimistic tech content, follow for more!

Apple has once more invented something completely revolutionary that has already been on the market for years.

I knew Apple was working on an AR/MR solution when I was working on a research project and they had acquired Metaio SDK in May 2015 for an undisclosed sum. I didn’t realise how long that journey would take, but I imagine it’s been at least 8 years in development!

Parents: “Don’t put your iPad too close to your face, make sure it’s a good length away from it. If you don’t, your eyes will get bad and you’ll need glasses!”

This launch is most likely to hear feedback from actual users and improve the experience for the next release. Which will probably drop the _Pro_ and the price.
Why else would they make a _Pro_ if they don't intend on making a _non-Pro?_

My dad actually worked for an eye tracking company called SMI in Germany which was then bought by Apple. Their engineers were almost all then employed by Apple and worked on this device. We could have gone too, but we wanted to stay in Germany.

Apple is so good at marketing

They're years late to the vr/ar party, they're calling themselves pioneers in the field, and everybody will just go along with it...

The fact that it costs 250% more than the best VR headset in the market is wild

I’m sure the quality and technology of this product is insane, but (as with all AR/VR/MR headsets) I don’t know if this is really what I want the future to look like. As The Verge described it: you “feel alone” when you’re wearing it. Even though it is Mixed Reality, you’re still mostly isolated in your own world. Watching a movie on a huge virtual screen sounds cool and it probably is, but it takes away the joy of watching it together with someone on the couch, watching each other’s reaction to a scene, and just enjoying a moment with your partner or friend. And I value that much more than what this thing offers. It would be a cool device for when I’m alone, but that’s just not the case 95% of the time.
To be clear, I’m not bashing Apple or AR/VR/MR. It is an insane technology, and it could be useful in some jobs (like architecture) or in other niches, but it’s just not for me. I still prefer the real world, there is a boundary between technology and real life that I not yet want to cross.

I actually like the concept of having it for your home office or something while still being able to walk around and be with your family. Imagine being bored doing work, so you go on a walk while still being able to do it. Of course you'll look like an idiot but the concept is cool.

Wake me up when this concept is a contact lens.

The iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, air pods, were all priced for the mass market out of the gate. This isn't, this is priced like the niche Mac Pro and will end up being a niche product. Meta will be the Microsoft of spatial computing (over 80% market share), apple will be the Apple of spatial computing (sub 20% market share).

They don’t expect to sell much at that price. I kind of agree with that plan

It's expensive but makes more sense than the Metaverse thingy

Apple: We don't know how to make. We know how to sell!

In 2007 we were supposed to guess what the next huge tech advance would be for a class and I said essentially this. But instead of a big face mask I said it would be contacts or something very small and minimal (possibly even a small implant) but would be able to track where your eyes moved and your hand motions. It’s definitely going to be the future I just wonder how much longer we have to wait for it. If they put the money into it definitely within 5-10 years but I had guessed we would already be there by now. People thought that my timeline was way off and that this was like 50+ years in the future but I think technology can move quickly and should but the costs sometimes are just too high you have to wait for the rest of the world to catch up. I won’t be investing in this product but once things start progressing and getting more comfortable and smaller I will be interested for sure… hopefully within 3 years they will have something significantly better.

You dont need a second device with the Vision Pro. It is its own computer.
