I'm an application scientist for a German instrument company. We sell high end analytical instruments, each piece can sell upward to over a million. Just trying to sell one machine in SE Asia and India is like pulling teeth. Research institutes, agencies, even Government ones often do not have enough budget to buy even one and sometimes entire institute have to pool money to get one. But you need these instruments to do bleeding edge research especially in life sciences.

In China, if they want it, they will get the budget to buy it. They buy not one, not two, they buy a dozens. A fricking dozens and they have these machines working and churning out data all the time. And they do it for multiple national labs, universities and even smaller institutes can still get the budget for one or two. The daring to innovate, and to requisite the resources to achieve those goals in China is astounding, it is simply on another level. Only America and Europe can come close to the level of budget that China can summon to get things they need to push to the bleeding edge.

In research, having the money to do things is as important as having the people to do it. China has both and will not give up getting both to get things done. And they are focused, and relentless, optimistic and boundless in energy. Only those who visited China, talked to the people there, eat with them, drink with them and see them work understand this.

China will get the chips they need. It is without any doubt that it will happen.

Americans tend to underestimate China because they have a paradigm that communism will always fail. They are in such denial that they often say that China isn't a communist economy and at the same time, they criticize Chinese government for being a communist 😅

In 1959 I was sent by VSO to teach in a Chinese Middle School in the jungles of North Borneo, I had achieved a Distiction at Advanced Level in Maths for Science. I soon found out that I was only qualified to teach the younger students as the older students were learning maths at a higher level than I had been taught. The Chinese have a very old culture that respects education.

I've been travelling to Yunnan China since 2000. Only one stretch of highway. Today after 2 decades, they've HSR connected to Laos. In the US today nothing much have changed except the president. Period.

When the US wants to block computer chips to China, I remember Alexander of geopolitics in conflict said that it will be a mistake of the US. Why? Because it will be creating another competitor in that field. China will not sit back idly but strive to work hard to get chips on its own. When that is done, the world will be flooded with Chinese chips much cheaper than those from the US.

I once hear a comedian say; "In China, they teach their child how to innovate and 8 years old already holding degree and master" ( abit over on this i think ) "and in US we are teaching the child to determine he or she is a girl or boy".... when i hear that joke it really strike my thought.

My family always jokes about being made in China for a leaking water tap back in the days. But, the most reliable tap in my house now is made in China.

Chinese history shows since ancient times it was a major inventor and innovator. The last few centuries for China was an aberration when it closed itself to the world. The Dragon is back and with a vengeance. The speed of invention/innovation is breathtaking. There are lots of things in China that you won't find elsewhere. Spend some time in China like myself, open your eyes and learn. I kid you not.

It's crazy how a country that is sanctioned so hard is leading the world in so many things. Imagine if they weren't sanctioned.

Even imitation are not easy as people think. It demands hard work and concentration.

As an advanced degree engineer this is not surprising. China probably out produces US advanced degrees by ten to one

Around the time of WWII Americans didn't think Japanese could fly planes because they had squinty eyes. We know why Americans didn't think China could innovate.
Maybe the US would be innovative if many of our brightest kids could afford to go to college or if everyone wasn't so damn greedy and reinvested some of the money they made.
Personally I'm getting a kick watching the US implode.
Yeah, it's not helping me financially but as someone who suffered miserably from bullying as a child I love seeing the bullying nation forced to eat crow.

Apple doesn't make the most innovative product. Apple has the most ruthless business model.

There is still this sentiment from some within China that perhaps China should continue Deng's ''Hide your strength, bide your time (or keep a low profile)” diplomatic policy. Problem is that China can no longer hide its industrial capabilities and its strength in tech advancements, and since the US is determined to undermine China's economic progress, China might as well showcase what it is really capable of now and into the future. America should focus on improving its competitiveness instead of trying to politicize everything China related (banning TikTok, semiconductors bans), because in doing so, it undermines its neoliberal capitalistic values such as free market, free trade, respecting private property rights and so on, as we can see, when it comes to China, all these can be thrown out of the window, and meanwhile, China is open for cooperation and fair competition.

Hopefully, China won't make the same mistake the U.S. did by losing the capability to manufacture efficiently when circumstances require it. They should also always keep a wary eye open when dealing with the U.S.

Chinese citizens are more educated than Americans. Also, much of the resentment towards China is racism, which is increasing in the United States

Hey Cyrus, love your work. HOWEVER ASPI is backed by American weapons manufacturer. So take their white papers with a grain of massive rock salt.

America spends more time arguing about abortion, privacy, environment, taxes, politics, racism; China is focused on just one thing, and that is getting ahead of the rest of the world.
