Is sitting bad for your health? You may have heard that sitting is the new smoking. This may be true, as sitting too much has many negative health effects. In this video, we'll discuss the negative effects of sitting for too long. We'll breakdown the science behind these negative effects on the spine, heart, fat burning, and more.

Research on sitting has shown that people who sit for 8 hours each day have a similar risk of dying as those who smoke or are obese. Sitting for long periods of time reduces circulation, leading to many problems in the body.

One way to offset the negative effects of sitting for too long is by performing daily activity. It takes 60-75 minutes of activity to offset 8+ hours of sitting. GET UP! MOVE! Flex your calves. If you are sitting at your desk for a long time each day with no time to spare for exercise, you can do micro workouts at your desk as well.

I can't tell you how grateful I am that I work out of my home and I can get up and walk around any time I want (and I do, about every 30-45 minutes, for at least 10 minutes at a time) but I did not realize it was this bad!

Absolutely correct! For some years I had a desk job where I sat at my desk for the greater part of 8 -10 hours, five days each week. Always seemed to feel tired, even though I wasn't doing anything particularly strenuous, and had problems getting a full night's sleep. Had back problems, and on standing up after a long time sitting would feel pain. It would take me several minutes to straighten up. On the advice of a Chiropractor rearranged my office by placing my desk on milk crates at each end so I had to stand instead of sitting. Took a bit of getting used to, but in time it worked. Have never looked back. Thanks for posting this. It's very good advice.

Sitting is the new smoking is such a good way to put it and relay the serious negative effects it can have. I make sure to get up at least once an hour and do a small exercise, whether it be something like a few push-ups or jumping jacks. Especially in today's day and age with so many working at a computer or from home, this is very important information.
