do NOT buy hermit crab shells

And I gave them a shell

I never really did because from the start, I had a feeling that the paint wasn't good for them..I never really understood why people sell these, they aren't safe for the little crabs.

I bought a hermit crab with a paint shell. I felt so bad for him as soon as put him in the tank. He was a lot bigger than my other hermit crabs. He was a large when all my other ones are small to medium. He tried to immediately jump ship. I had to hurry and throw some bigger shells in there because I knew he wanted out of his shell. Came back then minutes later and he was in another shell. I removed the painted shell and threw it away.

I purchased a hermit crab at the boardwalk with a shell like this I immediately got to take a shower because it’s very unhealthy

Ok I don’t keep hermit crabs I do keep fish but out of curiosity would a aquarium safe dye work to make safe colored shells

Those shells aren’t correctly shaped for Purple Pincers, which is what most people in the States have. You’ll want to look for Mexican Turbos, snakeskin turbos, Jade turbos and petholatus shells! Unpainted and unlaquered are best! They also now dremmel designs into the shells, which are fine for hermit crabs as there’s no chemicals involved!

I didnt mean to, but the area i bought mine (Sunsations, Maryland) she came with a painted one. Im scared, but dont worry, im shell changing as soon as possible.

I just got an hermit crab yesterday. It came with an painted shell, I've bought an natural shell. Hopefully it will move to the natural shell and I can take away the painted shell and add more natural shells
