What about words like message, plumage, cabbage and heritage? Are they jail words?

Privilege must be the exception to the rule of "dge"; short vowel e is just before the "j" sound, but is only spelled with the "ge". I realize there may be exceptions to any rule, but this one stumps me. I am fairly certain when I first was taught the word "privilege", 50 plus years ago, it was spelled "priviledge", with a dge. A few years ago, I noticed spell-check on my computer and my phone would automatically drop the "dge" and replaces with just "ge" ????
