The hidden lake under the ice of Antarctica

Lake Vostok is a subglacial lake underneath the ice of Antarctica, being buried under ice for 25 million years it may contain an uniquely bizarre alien ecosystem, which could be similar to the conditions on the moons Europa or Enceladus.

They should follow the procedure of the McMurdo team at subglacial Lake Whillans. Hot-water all the way down with a sterilized probe. Take a sample of the water being used for the borehole before-hand to prove that the microbes being sampled didn’t originate from your probe. The McMurdo team did this and discovered a great abundance of life in Lake Whillans, with very interesting properties (they are chemosynthetic, most of them eat up ammonia and methane that seeps from the nutrient-rich sediments) *and* were able to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that this wasn’t contamination. The water sample from their hot water contained 200x less diversity than the lake sample, and their surface sterilization procedures were iron-clad. Really hope more discoveries come out of Lake Vostok, and that we can actually prove them as discoveries!
