Well obviously it is possible without a degree, but the real question is how? How can you become a successful and profitable graphic designer without a degree?

However if you are someone who is going to try and become a designer without a degree, you need to be aware of some things that I talk about in todays video. I truly hope that it's useful to you all.

It's so inspirational to hear your backstory. It goes to show you never know anyone on the Internet, I would have never guessed what you went through in university. You made a name for yourself based on your own merit alone and that's a huge success in my eyes.

Thank you for sharing, teaching and inspiring us to become better people and designers! ❤️

Thank you for sharing. Your back story resonated with me, and made me realize it's just life, and is not always as easy as going and getting a degree, we have to make our own path, and work with what we have.

Your channel came up in my feed a couple of weeks ago as I was finishing a Bach of Digital Media. I don't have the energy to do something in Graphic Design so... I come everyday to your channel learn something new, and... have already noticed a change in my confidence. Thanks for sharing your journey with us ♥.

I'm going through the same thing right now!! I'm currently doing my master's in graphic design and my anxiety has gotten to a point where it's downright crippling my capability to be creative and literally do any work for uni. It feels so alienating sometimes because everyone else seems to be doing just fine :( So it's nice to hear I'm not the only one, but at the same time, I feel like it would be impossible to quit now because it would look so bad on my CV

very much agreed and full support..it's all about of concept and all these are require only your personal interest and passion of learning...no degree required for this..there are several books..online meterials..online courses are there...this field is skill based things nothing related with paper based certifications..

Finally some Satori lore, ive personally never experienced extreme anxiety first hand but ive seen my gf go through exactly what you've described. Im trying my best to be there for her.
I chose the solo path for a few reasons, one of them being the cost. International students dont get gov aid of any sort. I've been slowly learning and gaining confidence in my skills, I have a few skills under my belt and currently im learning a bit about UI design, its become much easier to pick up UI and web design thanks to you. I cant explain how much youve helped, im always building on the fundamentals of design that Ive learned from you and others!
Im actually working on my first big portfolio piece right now! Hopefully I pull it off well.

Great content as usual, Tom.
My own story (no degree) starts with 1 year at college (where typography was still done with hot metal - ask your granddad!), then doing a few years of menial jobs before getting a job drawing adverts at a drawing board for a national car sale paper (sat at a drawing board....Macs were some way off). The point is, I'm a freelance graphic design/videographer/editor now, without a degree but I've positioned myself correctly for the businesses I'm aiming for. I probably earn more than most heavyweight designers but I'm not here to brag about that. The process of being in this business for many years has taught me that you can never stop learning...at any age. So, from using real drawing boards, Letraset and Rotring pens, to hot metal type, to 'real' copy and paste (with hot wax), camera work to produce film/bromides/halftone dots, onto Macs (started at Photoshop 2.5 and Illustrator 3 - the old, old version), cutting negs on a lightbox, working on the first computer to plate and so on and so forth etc. etc. (can I hear the stifled yawns from the under 50's)? lol However, learning isn't hard when, like you say, you've got that interest. For me, graphic designers from the mid-90's were the new, skilled major commercial artists (forget Emin and Hirst). Discovering companies like Attik Design was a big 'wow' moment for me and, considering the equipment they were using (and no online libraries or collateral) at that time, I don't think that their work can be beaten. I'm still copy-...er, using design inspiration from then now.
Yes, a degree is very useful but if you've got the drive and the interest in all things design, there's no reason why you can't succeed.

Thank you so much for sharing these and for all the graphic design info. I've been thinking of learning graphic design for some time now, and I must say that your channel has been the greatest influence on me to finally act on it. Thank you 💟.

Great job. I love the video and I admire your courage to share your story.

I also didn't get a graphic design degree, and I can attest that it is hard to get in-house jobs. Even once you're in, it is hard to grow. That's why I've recently started my own company and started to go hard on socials to push my portfolio, so I can get projects/gigs. Hopefully soon, I'll go fully freelance

Great information Sir Tom. For me I started learning graphic design on my own many, many, many years ago. But after some years about talking going back to school finally happened back in 2011-2012 graduating in 2013. Then the next year continued on to get a Bachelors degree. I believe for college has good points, but I believe with channels like yours, someone can learn a bit more about graphic design. We learn something new everyday, especially in graphic design. Im not quite in your league of graphic design, but I have my niche of clients and workflow. Thanks for sharing Sir Tom. Have a great one.

I was in the same position as you, coming from a developer background, although I do have a couple of Diplomas in Web Engineering and Web Design, I always knew that Designing was my thing but unfortunately I didn't have the paper to go through with it. Then, came Coursera, finished Graphic Design Specialization from CALARTS and the UX Design Professional Certificate from Google. The platform helped me to get recognized specializations and professional certificates in various fields, now I am completly standing out from other applicants when I go to a Job interview.

Folks who are confused, give it a go in Coursera.

Hey, I just started designing (without a degree) and I love your videos. I am always learning something new from you. But since I have never sought a professional degree, I have a complex about my efficiency and skills. Especially when it comes to time management, I cant help but think that a designer with a degree would have completed the design in just an hour while it took me 2-3 hours. It would be great if I could know how much time should it ideally take me to complete one design. Let's say for example an Instagram post for digital marketing for a global brand
