Pay yourself first is one of those sayings that doesn't initially make sense. For years I thought it meant don't pay your bills if you don't have the money, focus on you first. Which Isn't what it means at all.

It's about creating better saving habits that can help you gain financial freedom or early retirement. Understanding the "pay yourself first" rule allows you to reliably save money even in tough time. It's a rule I wish I'd been following in my early twenties.
