Advanced LIGO detectors have identified a second gravitational wave event occurring from the merger of two black holes.

Gravitational Waves Detected 100 Years After Einstein's Prediction
"For the first time, scientists have observed ripples in the fabric of spacetime called gravitational waves, arriving at the earth from a cataclysmic event in the distant universe. This confirms a major prediction of Albert Einstein's 1915 general theory of relativity and opens an unprecedented new window onto the cosmos."

Here's the first person to spot those gravitational waves
"Today, physicists working with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) announced that after decades of effort they had detected gravitational waves-ripples in spacetime itself-set off by the explosive collision of two massive black holes."

Data release for event GW150914
"This page has been prepared by the LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC) and the Virgo Collaboration to inform the broader community about a confirmed astrophysical event observed by the gravitational-wave detectors, and to make the data around that time available for others to analyze."

When scientists manage to find gravitational waves twice and you still can't find a gf/bf.

Capitalism: how do we use this to make money?
Socialism: how do we use this to improve quality of life?
Comunism: how do we use this to save money?
Fascism: how do we use this to control people?
Religion: how does God fit into all this?
Conservatism: how is this not a waste of time and money?
Liberalism: how much would we have to spend to really get the most out of these findings?
Political: "I'd like to congratulate these fine men and women for their hard work. (how much are we paying these crack pots? ... can we get rid of some of them? The voters won't care)
Parents: is there any danger to my children?
Libertarianism: What jobs will this create?
Ecological activism: what is the environmental impacy and how can we protect the natural state of this for the sake of research (... and donations)?
Conspiracy theorists: it's not gravitational waves, you sheep! It's aliens!
New age spiritualists: Fantastic! Now I can retune my crystals to compensate for these cosmic/astral waves to optimize my positive outlook and good fortune.
Rastafarianism: How can I use this to get high?
Pastafarianism: such is evidence of the great flying spaghetti monster. His wavey noodly appendages doth spread through the very universe itself. Surely this is proof of that.

As you asked, I would be excited to see two black holes collide, only if you could actually see the black holes!

My first thought was 'WTF does them motherfuckin' aliens want again'

I have a great idea!! What if we put 3 monitoring centres around the world and triangulate the 3-dimensional contraction/rippling in gravitational density! This will offer a completely new insight like an x-ray being able to see through earth! Just put more centres and compare their magnitudes and make a map :)

My best comment so far on Youtube :D

We Found humans and i responsible for monitoring them. FML.

Well done everyone 'we' found these waves. Give yourself a pat on the back.

maybe they are common but now we are advanced enough to detect these wave :/

the gravitational waves travelled 1.4 billion light years to reach us ;_; i need this kind of commitment in life

This is very important. We can't do statistical analysis on a single data point.

I think you should use the word observed instead of discovered since it's the second time.

If two huge black holes collided, imagine how cool it would be to "feel" the gravitational waves!

This is awesome. I live a couple of miles away from LIGO Livingston. I talk to some of the scientist a couple of times a week. 😊

So, without rewatching the first GW discovery video, someone correct me if I misunderstand how the LIGO observatory works:

- The L-shape is to create perpendicular "arms" (for lack of a better word)
- A given GW would compress one arm and stretch the other (however minuscule the effect)
- The compression/stretching affects travel times for light particles from the launch site to the return junction, allowing for minute measurements in changes in distance created by the distortion
- The distortion is not a naturally Earth-based phenomenon and behaves as a GW is postulated to behave
- Detection confirmed?

With all these waves, you'd think someone would figure out how to ride them

So if we get gravitational waves from two colliding blackholes, what happens if one merged blackhole from two blackholes merges with another merged blackhole that was originally two? More Gravitational waves!

So gravitational waves, that are detectable, are made by some of the biggest events in the universe happening billions of light years away, and we compare it to ripples on a lake. that reminds me of a movie scene, that very very few people will get: That was the biggest splash ever.
