This song, and hear me out, perfectly describes the Columbine Massacre of 1999.
The two boys who perpetrated the incident, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold mentioned in their own journals they had been bullied, and that they felt like they were the 'losers of the losers'. Dylan even mentioned to a 'white hat' (jock/popular kid) that they had called him the F slur, to which the guy didn't seem to remember (the worst scars are usually left by ones who don't remember giving it to you). None of it excuses their actions/behavior after the fact, all it does is explain why they did what they did.

wait for them to ask you who you know, " - Brooks Brown was best friends with the two gunmen from Columbine, although his relationship with Eric had gotten rocky Eric chose to spare him just before the shooting started. "Brooks, I like you now, go home, " (in fact I'm pretty sure that's where the stereotypical saying 'don't come to school tomorrow' comes from). This song could very much be from his perspective, and after the fact he very much may had been thinking that all his friends were heathens. Eric was also deemed to be very controlling and outgoing, and if Brooks Brown were to introduce you to Eric Harris, he may had said that exact thing to you before introducing you. ("Wait for them to ask you who you know, ")


"Please don't make any sudden moves,
you don't know the half of the abuse, " - ("Please don't make any sudden moves, ") since it's a fairly normal thing for criminals to say during their criminal activity (i.e. robbing, stealing, burglary etc.) they may say this to keep you in line so they don't get caught, however the irony here is that Eric and Dylan won't need to use this line for what they were about to do. I would imagine it being a line Eric writes in his journal as a way of mocking the survivors, as a 'you wish we did though'. As far as abuse is concerned, there is no evidence on either side that either one of them was abused in any way, which in some odd way makes it even more tragic.

Just because we check the guns at the door doesn't mean our brains won't change, from hand grenades, " - Eric and Dylan often talked how they would have to distance themselves from their loved ones prior to the shooting, as a way of protecting them from themselves, and so they could have less emotional attachment to the world before leaving it. I imagine the second line is more metaphorical, even if they decided against it their better intuition is telling them to do so. They mentioned multiple times in their journals that they didn't think life was going to be worth living past High School, so it's better to 'go down with the ship'.

"You'll never know the psychopath sitting next to you,
you'll never know the murderer sitting next to you,
you'll think, 'how'd I get here, sitting next to you?', " - From this moment onward, nobody would know who sitting next to them was secretly planning something, nobody could be trusted not to be a psychopath or a murderer. Eric and Dylan were just ordinary kids prior to the shooting, sure there may had been some warning signs but nobody really suspected anything of them. That kid sitting next to you in class named Charlie? He's gonna shoot up your school next week. That's the mentality we've had post Columbine, and it's reflected perfectly in these lyrics. Post the shooting, a lot of kids may had wondered how on earth they could've sat next to such horrible people and thought they were normal.


"And after all I've said, please don't forget, " - Eric and Dylan notoriously left mountains of evidence leading right back to them prior to the shooting, the Littleton Sheriffs Office had multiple opportunities to act on a search warrant to search Eric Harris' bedroom, after his website was reported by Brooks Browns parents. They sat on it, did absolutely nothing. Eric said multiple times he was going to bomb somewhere, or that he was going to gun down people, he talked openly about it on his website with bomb making tutorials and everything. After everything he said, multiple times he may had told white hats he was going to kill them, but nobody took him seriously. It wasn't until it was too late, and now you'll never forget.
