This is the exact reason why you see those videos online of students pummeling and assaulting another student whilst the teacher stands off to the side and gently nudges them while saying 'stop'. Honestly. It's sickening, especially when the victim doesn't do anything to defend themselves other than curl up and wait for someone to help them.

When I was in high school, the 8th graders would come for the day to take a look around and see what high schools like. When my sister came with her class, I was obligated to be with her because she has autism. I broke up the fights of 2 of the same students about 4 times in the 4 hours those heathens were there. Teachers did nothing, I separated them, and made them chill the hell out. Worst day of high school ever..

Former law school professor here. A teacher/student relationship is one of those tort law relationships that create a legally enforceable duty for the teacher to aid the student. If a student were being physically attacked then the teacher may not have to get personally involved, but if they don't then they have an affirmative duty to take some action to protect the student such as promptly notifying a school resource officer or other appropriate person(s).
