My theory is:

The doctor played a game at the edge of the universe, and fundamentally changed the laws of the universe, and now more supernatural things are happening. Like ghosts, and monsters with actual powers and stuff. Not just foreign science and biology, but actual magic. Like the toymaker.
Like when Kate said after the toymaker was defeated and turned into the chest, "Take it to the highest security vault and put it in a ring of salt". Why? Why would she say that if it hasn't been proven to be not just a superstition?

When Jodie Whittaker had done one series, I was in a meeting for work and the two younger ones were talking about si-fi and one of the people in the meeting asked them "How good is the new woman playing the Doctor?". They did not know what to say, so I answered it with "No idea, the script is so bad, there is no way you could tell how good she is playing the part, the only one who comes out of it is Bradley Walsh who must be a great actor for that to happen!". The two young ones looked at each other and both agreed with me, as did a few more in the room who had seen some of it.
It got so bad that they had to all "kill" the cast off and bring back the cast from six years before just to keep it going. Then after that it looks like they are going back to the story line that was killing it!

Kinda mentally stuck on that shot of the dirty and battered TARDIS sitting by the sea. It makes me think of Fourteen's little fantasy in Wild Blue Yonder.
