I wanna be a math major because it's the first step to be a math professor!

I'm continuing the family tradition. My mother and my mother's mother and my mother's mother's mother... All had a math degree as their first degree. lol

I would recommend someone avoid a mathematics major if they have a severe problem/fear with being wrong. One of the best ways to learn math is too try different approaches to solving a problem you've never seen before, and (depending on how foreign that problem is) more often than not, your first (many) approaches will be wrong. If you want to first think about a problem so you always approach it with a (not the) correct solution, then you'll most likely come across (too) many problems that you won't solve.

At my university, the professor who was "correct the most" was also "wrong the most." And this is because he had so little fear about being wrong.

When I was a math major in college people in non-stem degrees would often get a little intimidated when to talking about "intellectual" topics around me (not that I was happy with that, it just happened). I'd also get the 'nerd' perception quite often, but only after I told someone my major. I disagree a little bit with the liking calculus statement because often that's really all you have to go by for determining whether or not you like math. Most people in calculus courses won't be able to open a book on real analysis or topology and make an informed decision on whether or not they like it without trying one of the courses first. You should very much want to learn math and enjoy mathematical reasoning if you want to major in it though.

Math is the language of the world. Learn it and you'll never be stuck again.

Who else here in Math major just because though math Major are the only major that can make you interest + full of logic calculation??

I'm 39 and I'm a math major...the only class I have had issues with is statistics. Love math, love logic, hate statistics lol

I regret graduating with a B.S. degree in Statistics. I went on hundreds of interviews and never worked a single day or used my degree. I ended up going back to get a medical-related degree and actually was able to work in the medical field.

I really wish this video was out my freshman year of college. I am a junior right now and I pursued mathematics. I can tell you all of these reasons resonated with me. I loved calculating, I thought it looked cool and did not exactly what I wanted to do. It's not too late for me but definitely would have wished someone told me to stop, but it's not too late for any of you out there deciding to stick with mathematics. If any of these reasons, especially the first one, fits you, please do not make the same mistake I made and switch. It will save you time and money.

In other words sometimes solving math problems for the purpose of getting good money is not always guaranteed

I am self-studying maths, while I am not in college. I treating maths as a hobby first, before I ever decide to make any career out of it. As a CG artist, I am self-studying maths for 3D realism including animation. I want to write badass maths for physics simulations like rain, snow, thunder, lightning, explosion, etc.

I literally did Math (I'm in my third year) because:
1) It's the most difficult major a human can do (therefore doing the hardest makes me able to do anything)
2) It's the least major that needs memory
3) I'm simply in love with Math🤷🏻‍♂️

EDIT:
Hello guys! It's so interesting to see the comment after 1 year! I got a scholarship from a French university so now I'm continuing my masters in Pure Mathematics. I updated my opinion a little bit:
1) It's "by far" the most difficult major. I've seen some of what other difficult majors learn and it's nothing compared to Mathematics. What's difficult in Physics for example is the Mathematics which is considered easy in a Math major. Plus, nothing ever get close to Mathematics with proof.

2) It's the least major that needs memory BUT It really needs more memory than what I thought.

3) I still love it but I'm starting a little bit to regret doing Pure Mathematics ; I'm very good at programming, plus, an applied Math degree is easier to do, by far better to help you find a job, and the jobs you find are more payed.

I've already decided Math is definitely going to be a side thing and if I decide to pursue a degree it will definitely be a minor or double major, because I love chemistry and bio and I need to nail down which of the two fields I want to settle in. I love numbers, but if higher level math is as abstract as I hear it is, I'm definitely not going to like it. Numbers are fun, but not "$40000 down the drain" fun.

I would say that people wanting a degree that is "hard and impressive" seems to be the reason many freshmen try to declare engineering, physics, math, or computer science
these students realize the density and power of such majors aa to flexibility yet have no passion for this fields. The goal of money alone will not propel most of these students to success.

If you're a pure math major and don't teach yourself programming and machine learning, you're playing yourself. The only way to make good money (6 figures) with a pure math degree is to get a graduate degree in stats, financial engineering, or something along those lines and then do data science or software development in finance.

bro please stop only saying math teacher for the only job math majors can get idk what I want to do after I graduate but 100% know I am not being a teacher hearing "if you want to be a math teacher, major in math" makes me cringe. What else can I do?? crying emoji

I picked math for the first 2 reasons you mentioned, and I’ve been getting As in my first year math classes, but I don’t think I really liked them. I guess it just made changing to something else harder.

I soon realized the "whats your major" question was merely the most convenient way to start convos in school. But eventually I remember my friends, and forgot half their majors haha.

Well if you are a math major than you can start learning code, it'll be easier for you and you will most likely find jobs in analytics or data structure.

I like the idea of Math Major because you can pick up engineering or finance in Graduate school.
