Propagate Ficus from Cuttings for Bonsai 🌱 *EASY*

Hi Everyone! In this video I show you how to propagate the ficus tree from cuttings that you can then use to create a starter clump style Bonsai.

The method of propagation I am showing you is what has always worked for me and I believe is the easiest and best way for beginners!

Simply place your ficus cuttings in a glass of water and within a few weeks you will notice them develop roots. Once the ficus cuttings have roots, simply transfer them to a free draining soil and water them well.

However in this video as a bonus, I show you also how to create a CLUMP STYLE BONSAI. This is best done when trees are very young as they will develop into eachother and fuse together much easier than they would when they are older. The clump style that we create is in the form of a MAME Bonsai.

In the UK the Ficus Bonsai makes an excellent indoor Bonsai or houseplant as it can find it difficult to withstand the outdoor climate. There is a large variety of Ficus Species, this DIY method of propagation should work for the majority of them!

I propagate in my Aquaponics house. They nest in a drain and fill rock bed and root beautifully without any maintenance. So fun!

I appreciate you saying that there is no one way to do bonsai. I agree. As with any art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

But, of course...
...a living bonsai is ALWAYS more beautiful than a dead one!

Ficus root so easily. They even make great root over rock plantings. Great video!

I am so glad I found this! I tried propagating our ficus benjamina last year. Our parent plant was very overgrown, so I had 10 cuttings. I put them in soil instead of water, because someone told me to. Only 3 survived! I didn't know if it would work with water, but now that I know, I will try it again in water! Thanks!!

Youtube recommended to this me after I had searched for some information on a new ginseng ficus tree I bought last weekend. Last night I was watering it and cleaning it up some and noticed one of the branches wasn't actually connected to the tree. So I plopped it in some water based on the thumbnail alone and figured I'd better give this a watch to make sure I did that correctly. I shall wait and see what happens! So glad for this recommendation!

I put a cutting in water a month ago and the roots are just starting to sprout! Can’t wait to see what it will look like 1 year from now.

Brilliant tutorial :) I've never bonzaied but I do find it very satisfying to watch roots sprouting out of cuttings. I miss having plants about the place, but I go away too much and it's awkward having to ask people to come in and water them all the time.

I have been putting cuttings in moist potting soil and bagging them, works pretty good. I have some ficus I will be pruning soon, so will be seeing how the water method works. Thank you.

Great job, young man...great communication skills AND it's obvious you know what you're doing. Enjoy a long life of bonsai. I only wish I'd taken it up at your age instead of wasting so many years on the golf course.
